do you guys think we could package ivory and harper, and trade with someone like the jets for a 3rd this year and 6th next year. Then trade back and grab a second rounder. if available, draft vaccaro/elam with the first, jamie collins in round 2, brandon williams and dallas thomas/chris faulk/oday aboushi in 3rd, ryan swope in 4th, william gholston in the 5th, and ryan griffin in 6th. thoughts on something like this?

There are way too many moving parts to think that things could work out like that. Also, with harper's cap hit we really might as well keep him this year. This idea is supported by the fact that nothing has been done with harper's contract or he hasn't been released up until this point. That is to say that if he was cut/traded the cap hit that he will have plus whoever is his replacement probably won't be cheaper or much cheaper than his staying on the roster.

Also considering that he is a good fit for Ryan's system, it isn't likely that his replacement would be better for us this next year. Trading/cutting Harper we would end up with possibly worse production with same or similar cap hit. It's not worth taking the type of gamble that you are describing.

Do you want harper on the team especially at his price? Do you think an nfl gm would want him at that price? Why would an nfl gm pay 2m and a draft pickfor an often iinjured running back when they could grab one late for a couple hundred thousand dollars.

decent points i guess. but these are more detailed reasons of why it wouldnt happen. i dont believe that there are to many moving parts given the saints history of being very active when it comes to trading. the only thing im not familiar with is who is responsible for paying the salary/signing bonuses of traded players. i personally believe that harper is past his prime, and he fits the jets scheme even better (eg laron landry). and getting a safety late in the first round would be cheaper that having harper. Will this actually happen? probably not, but it is plausible.

why would the Jets want to take Harper's contract and give us a 3rd rounder and a 6th next year?

Why wouldn't the Jets just sign a FA safety and draft a running back in a late round?

We still take the cap hit for his signing bonuses if traded. That was the crux of my point that replacing him with a cheaper option is still just as expensive on the books. Cap hit of Harper bonuses + cheaper option is about equal to cap hit of just keeping Harper. And we take the risk of the cheaper option not working out. Might as well go with the known quantity of Harper.

players with similar skill sets as harper have thrived in rex ryan's 34 scheme, he could be a better asset to them than the saints. ivory is oft injured, but he's better than what they currently have. sure they could find someone in the draft, but if we tendered him with a 2rounder, its evident that he has a decent amount of value. a 3rd and 6th the next year for two players that fit your scheme and needs is not asking to much at all. we gave up a 6th for a player we cut (rudd).

peazy...i see what youre saying. his signing bonuse is 1.8mil. honsestly id rather pay that and gather draft picks though. but thats because im not as high on harper as you are.

I'm convinced, Harper is not going anywhere. Saints obviously love him. So far, they haven't even asked him to re-structure his outrageous $7 mil cap hit. Add in, he led the defense with 88 total tackles in Spags' wretched system, and it's a recipe for "Harper is staying" no-matter-how-much-I-hate-it.

Ideally, I'd love for a team (like Cincy) to sign Ivory, which would give us a 2nd rd pick, and free up the two million dollars we'd be forced to pay Ivory if he stayed as our 4th RB.

Then, in a perfect world, I'd like to sign Butler, Nnamdi, and McKinnie for cap friendly prices, filling needs and freeing up the draft for BPA in rounds 3-6.

Then I'd hope to draft another pass rusher with our 1st pick (like Jarvis Jones or Mingo) to compliment Butler on the other side (like we had for many years with the fierce Swilling & Jackson combo).

With our new second round pick, I'd take Mathieu as my nickel, and for punt returning.

Third round on, BPA as competiton for NT, SS, WR, & OT.

I like the way you think BUT:
1) Would Cincy or anyone give up a 2nd rounder for an injury prone running back ?
2) IF (and that's a BIG IF), we could sign all 3-Butler, Nnamdi, McKinnie- then I say OT with the first pick and s safety or BPA Rounds 2-6. I think Mathieu is a reach at 2nd Round.

Would love Vaccaro and Collins, and Faulk for that matter ... but why would the Jets want Harper?

analyst in da house, welcome aboard. As long as you're more yst than anal ya oughta get along here.

Harper is untradable due to his contract. Try looking at some of the capology pages HERE. Then Saints contracts can be found at the same site as Harper's contract here.

the tenders are for 1st, 2nd, or original round. Since he wasn't drafted is why they did a 2nd. Any team could have signed him otherwise with no obligation. The Saints only would have had the option to match. As far as Ivory's market value I'd go a 4th Rd as high end. That's likely too much as well.

Keep trying though. As far as your picks-
Vacarro possible but no real + value at 15. A stretch if anything.
Elam is a 2nd Rder
Collins is cool, slim chance he could be around at 75
Brandon Williams is a great 3rd Rd fit
Swope is a 3rd or higher IMO
Not a Gholston fan at all, 5th might be right tho
Griffin as good as any 6th Rd QB. I did Matt Scott 5th rd in my last mock.

There's a stickied mock draft thread if ya missed it
