The reality of the fake punt failing

Ball was on SF 45
4th and 18 for the 1st
Score was SF 35-33
Pass was incomplete, no PI called, should have been holding
IF the holding was called would have been marked off from the LOS
Replay the down, now it is 4th and 8 on the SF 35*** INCORRECT On my part
Defensive holding is 5yds from LOS automatic 1st
ETA Would have been SAINTS 1st down ball on SF 40yd line
Seems like it was really poorly designed and executed to have Hill throw that, Payton has to know if the refs judged it to be a punt formation then PI was taken out of play
I think the play was so brazen, the Saints actually caught the refs off guard and they blew it. No replay on the holding, nothing they could do
SF marched 14 plays to a 6 yd TD pass to extend the lead to 9
Seems like Payton may have been able to give a head’s up to the LJ that it was NOT a punt formation, but we will never know
League probably comes out tmrw and says they missed it

Ah you are right, my bad
Defensive holding is 5 yds from LOS and Automatic 1st
So would have been 1st down from the SF 40
Damn that makes it even worse

Peirrera said it wasn’t even holding because holding on a gunner requires a “takedown”
So there won’t be a league office MEA culpa either

Stinks any way you look at that play

I don't believe. In all the years of watching NFL games this has never been mentioned until today. The simple fact is had there been a punt holding would have likely been called . The official should not be concerned with what occurred up the field and whether it was a fake. He had one job to officiate what occurred between those two players. Either it was holding or it wasn't. Did he miss it? Maybe, but it was not just a brief hold and release. He either blew the call or misinterpreted a rule.

Running a fake wasn’t necessarily a bad decision, running that route however was a fricking terrible decision. As a ST coach & Head Coach you have to know the rules, and you have to understand that the route you’re running looks just like a gunner doing his job on a regular punt so you have to anticipate he will be hands on blocking him the whole time.

It is amazing that each week, the NFL is using the Saints to teach the rest of the public about obscure rules that have never before been seen.
