The Lombardi Colored Glasses

I'm thinking some only see the team through Lombardi colored glasses... World Champions and that's it.
World Champions is right but the 2009 path was far from a perfect season. For those that have difficulty bearing with just winning, a review of 2009 regular season might bring a little balance...
1. Lions, big win over a rookie QBs first game on a team that went 2-14
2. Eagles, big win over a QB making his first start, 17-13 at half
3. A defensive win over lowly Bills, up by only 10-7 with less than 10min left in game
4. Jets, Another rookie QB, 6min left in the game and they were still within striking distance up by 17-10
5. Giants, a legit domination
6. The Miami miracle comeback from down 21 in the 2nd. They stayed within 6pts until Porter sealed it with less than 2min left
7. ATL @ home was not secured until 3min left in game
8. Did not take 23-20 lead in Panthers home game until less than 5 min remaining
9. Against the 1-15 Rams it was a 28-23 struggle
10. At TB a blowout
11. Patriots, another domination
12. @ Washington only won in OT cuz of a kicker shanking a chip shot like Hartley vs. Atl
13. @ ATL facing backup QB Redman took 26-23 lead with FG at 4:42 left in game
14. tough slugfest loss to boys
15. OT loss to 3-13 Bucs
16. non starters loss to CARO
There were many good wins but there were far fewer dominant ones than what most people remember due to the Lombardi effect.
If you care more about style points or power rankings than wins at least give the coming AZ-TB-CLEV stretch before ranting too wildly.

Yea, most of the fans on here are more of college football fans. They dont realize you dont have to dominate every game to be successfull in the NFL.

I just know that before last year, I would have been thrilled to be 3-1 after 4 games.
It's hard, but we have to remove last year as a measuring stick. This was a good post.
The way I see it - we started off pretty fast last year and started to wind down at the end of the regular season. Perhaps this year we'll do the opposite once we get Bush/Sharper back and begin to find our rhythm as the Super Bowl hangover wears off.

I'm with you blues. I bet the Colts wished they would have won ugly today. The Saints are victims of their own success, but I'll take 3-1 after 4 games every time.

now that you put it that way...i don't feel so bad

Great post. Exactly what some of these kids needed.

If the saint get some injuries healed up they will be a great team in the second half of the season. JMO

well said. most people i know are freakin out saying we aren't as good blah blah blah. i'm tired of hearing it this is the NFL. i think it's awesome how we find ways to win, even when all of our RB's and safties are hurt, and we overcome turnovers. 3-1, and a fg away from undefeated, good stuff.

Great post Blues!!!
Also our next three games are Arizona, Bucs and Browns. All should be winnable games. After those everyone should be back Sharper, Ingram and Reggie. Pierre and Harper should be back before then. So by the time we play somebody truly dangerous (Steelers) we should be back to 100%. So should go into the Steelers game 6-1.Point is WE WILL BE FINE PEOPLE!!!!

maybe so blues.....really, injury bug bit us REALLY early this year.
The loss of not one but both the first and second string running backs has hurt badly...maybe not so much in the running game, but in creating mismatches for the defense in the passing game.
That...and I surely don't remember Drew Brees wearing a knee brace last year. Things are much different this year.
And, let's be frank...some fans just aren't very knowledgeable.

amazing how some people forget that already.

We're turning it over a lot right now and have won with defense. Look at points allowed instead of yardage. Once the offense gets on track (and it's obvious that our playcalling is affected by the loss of Bush), we'll be fine.

My post from another thread. Prolly belongs here.
We are playing with what is essentially our 5th and 6th string rb's. We are 3-1. One made FG away from being 4-0. What's wrong is we have fans who now are going to expect a superbowl win every year and expect to win every game by 30 pts.

To paraphrase Jim Mora from after the Vikings game, it's really hard to win an NFL game. Be happy with any win you get.
