They both helmed to of the worst defenses i can remember in Saints history. 2012 and 2015. That’s all i gotta say

The Roster on the Saints Defensive side of the ball was probably not worthy to be called a bone fide NFL-caliber roster. And who built that roster? Not Spags.

The proof is in the pudding. If I had started this thread a few year ago, it would have no logical basis. Now that Spag's and his Defense have a SB ring, it is fair to arge that Payton fired him pre-maturely. It's a fair point. Fans may disagree, and that's their right. I'm probably not as fanatic as are they.

Both trash defenses. Only difference is that the Saints game was a regular season game in which the 49ers didn't have much pressure on them to win and Shannahan unloaded our entire playbook on us. While the Chiefs game he called scared and choked with all the pressure on them in the biggest game.

I’m gonna disagree with you big time on this. He also had a SB ring prior to the Saints as a DC. He had the resume when we brought him in. Whether the talent was there or not in 2012, there’s no excuse for that abortion of a unit. Now if you wanna say maybe we should’ve kept him for one more year because Payton missed that entire season so it was a lost cause from the beginning, I’ll give you that. But you can’t justify keeping a DC after he just had, statistically, the worst defense in NFL history.

Spags D while he was with Saints was historically bad, so what's your point?

I’m not taking up for Spags but we had absolutely no chance at winning anything that season. Who knows how he could’ve done had we had a head coach that year

You just contradicted yourself!

Read your first sentence. That's all I'm arguing. That's my whole point -- should have kept him for one more year because Payton missed that entire season. That's it. That's my whole point.

That's why I disagree with your second sentence.

My entire thread is based on my own personal conviction that a man should be given a fair chance to improve and show his capability before being fired. Absent some kind of misconduct, one season is most probably not enough time to give any DC a fair chance, IMHO.

No, but I get your point. Spags had the wrong pieces in place for his style of defense. He was a bad hire, because we brought in a guy that runs a completely different style of D than what we were built for. Payton recognized that after the season and fixed it. I don't think Spags is a bad DC, nor do I think he deserves all the blame for that terrible year. It was simply a horrible fit

The draft classes did not have Jeff Ireland's fingerprints on them back then either.

Every Saints defense has had to deal with officiating even going way back to the Dome Patrol.

Good point. I didn't consider this angle before.
