Shutdown Corner Commentary
Marcus Davenport
Round 1 - Pick 14 (from Packers)
The price the Saints paid for him is insane. New Orleans' run as the most impulsive team in the NFL continues. They made a huge move to take an athletic but largely unproven pass rusher. Grade: D-

Saints had a great draft in 2017. Will be interesting to know what they were thinking in the "war room". Many consider MD a work in progress. I hope he does great. They need him to be very good in year 1. Sounds like it will take him over 1 year to develop. If he develops well, then the Saints have filled their biggest need, but at a steep price. Only time will tell if it is worth it.

Will laugh when Davenport and company are feasting on QB’s in passing situations.

I actually like the pick and think the trade up was worth it. I think we finally addressed DE and got our guy. When they re-grade our draft they'll push that D to an A.

I love BOTH the trade and the PICK!

There isn't much to hate about the player.

I think he's going to be a solid player, but it seems like the saints paid $50 for a Burger King double whopper. I didn't get the 2018 1st round pick being part of the move. The good thing is, time will tell because all the speculation is complete nonsense anyway.

i mean how do you propose we go from 27 to 14?
Last year KC gave up 27th, future 1st, and 3rd rounder to go to 10 and Houston gave up 25th, future 1st to get to 12
Value-wise, it lands right inbetween those two trades. KC gave up more than average, houston gave up a little less than average.
The question is if this guy ends up being Ziggy Ansah, would you rather:
Above average pass rusher at DE or Above average CB (Tre White taken @ 27) and average DT (They compared Taven Bryan to Robert Nkemdiche).
Considering we're legitimately at a point where its about quality vs quantity these next 2 years, I'm not mad.

he was the 2nd best DE in the draft...
we spent $50 on Filet Mignon(standard steakhouse price)
I am sorry you are more of an Applebees kinda guy

I get that. But you paid a huge price with a first rounder for a highly speculative pick to move up for that price. But I know I'm on the wrong board to have a logical conversation. Best of luck

Look at the draft this year, there's really only Chubb, Davenport they classify that have "elite potential". DE is the 2nd largest need among all teams, finding an elite prospect is hard because you rarely get one unless you hit the top 10, mostly top 5. Ontop of that nobody thinks there's another one in this draft (carter, key, and landry are all guys they think have potential to be "very good" but not elite).
It is a speculative pick because he's raw, but the truth is the Saints need to win within the next 2 years (or 3 if Brees can go that far). DE was absolutely a huge need and the talent pool is extremely shallow. There's not much DE talent in the 2019 free agency pool either: Dunlap, Avril, Graham, Wilkerson being the biggest names (I'm assuming Ansah/Lawrence both getting paid 17m+ annually by their teams) and assuming all things go properly you're picking late in the 1st again, where there's lacking DE talent just like every year (aside from '16...that was a weird one).
To get to 14, you were going to need to use the 27th pick, that's all there is to it. Using a future 1st sucks, but just look at it on paper for 2019.
Would you rather go into the 2019 season with Taven Bryan and a rookie DE with likely less upside or a Marcus Davneport.

I imagine he will have an Aldon Smith type of rookie year, where all he will be asked to do is rush the passer.

that's a huge price
if you buy a lambo for $400k, while it's the market value, it's still a huge price

It was the last Lambo on the lot and we likely wouldn't have a shot at one next year without paying the same or an even higher price.
Plus this Lambo may be the thing we were missing to get that fine arse dime piece we've been eyeing. We didn't feel like waiting another year to get it in.

I really don't see it. The talking heads weren't calling the trade a "huge price" while they were hyping the Saints taking Jackson. We had a back end 1st round pick this year and more than likely a back end 1st round pick next year.
Hell the Jets gave up 3 high 2nd round picks to move 3 spots in the draft.
