Scouting Tidbit on Butler

I got tickets to be a corporate guest at practice yesterday (subtle brag) and part of the experience was eating breakfast and hearing a speech from the Saints head scout. I had asked him about the process of signing undrafted free agents and how the Saints sell their program and the timing. He said that his area scout had been recruiting Butler for weeks before the draft, and had even sent him a highlight video of Colston, saying "This is how we plan on using you." He said Butler had basically signed as an UDFA a few weeks before the draft.

He also said what most of us already know. They don't look to keep a certain number of players at any position. He said if you have 7 WRs and 4 RBs and have to make a cut, they look more at the talent and fit than they do "We need X number of RBs."
He also said that the scouts have friends all around the league, so if they are heavy in a certain spot or weak, they will call around and see who they can get in a trade and who will most likely get cut.

This makes sense considering their ability to do it successfully is what makes them good at their job.

hell of a gamble though....I mean the word out of Airline with this group has been if you like a guy you get him.
Seems like previous draft success and depth might allow us some house money to gamble a bit

Nothing like having those corporate passes. Last week jeff Ireland let it out the bag that McCoy would be starting day one. This weeks butler story was great too. One of the few perks of working with Verizon.

I’m clueless, downvote away...
But if we recruited this dude so heavy pre-draft. Why not throw a late pick for him instead of letting him potentially be drafted by another team? Again, I’m probably missing something here but I just find it very odd, and almost to the point of lying to hype this dude up.

They likely felt similarly about a few guys and he was least likely to be stolen given how the board fell that day?
