but every year we go into the offseason with a huge cap problem, and we emerge with largely the same team
This is about twice the size of a problem of what we've ever had. I'm not panicked but we need to have a down offseason and get back on track per se.

Accumulated future draft picks and rookie contracts will alleviate some of the stress that restructures and extensions will not cover.

quote:Yeah, even after the NFL already stated that the minimum would be $175m. $170 was never an option, just an ill-informed person on Sirius/XM.
well that's good, for a thread talking about it falling to 170

Saints went all in last year and really made no secret about it
It was a gamble for sure but I’d rather have a team willing to make the moves than the team that sits on its hands.
Time to unpack now though. It won’t be pretty

You're right it won't be pretty, but it won't be that difficult. If they kick the can down the road over the next few years and hit big in the drafts, this team will still be a formidable opponent in the NFC. Or, they can rip the band aid off and restart; but the fans will need to bare with them for the next 2-3 seasons until the cap hits clear out. I put this in another thread to show how quick Loomis can make it happen.
quote:
Playing around real quick on OTC and using their #s:
Extend: Ram, Sanders, Latt, Kwon & Jackrabbit saves about $39M
Restructure: Cam, MT, Peat & Armstead saves another $31.2
Cut post-6/1: Morstead $3.5M savings
This will get us about $1M under the cap minimum of $180M and keep a lot of the core together. They still need to clear enough money for the draft and bring back some of their FA. But if I can throw this together in a matter of minutes, I'm sure Loomis has a few more ideas.
He's got hops.
