Drew Brees' contract is set to void after this season, after which the #Saints will be left with $21.3 million in dead money on the cap, whether Brees comes back or not.

The Saints did indeed restructure Drew Brees' contract, as @TomPelissero reported.

Brees' 2019 cap hit goes down from $33.5M to $22.7M to open $10.8M in space this year, but the Saints are now set to have a $21.3M dead cap hit for him in 2020.

This is brees last year no doubt

Just when I think I understand the cap. We save 10M this year but add 20+ to next year? The hell?

We moved the $10.8 saved this year to next year where Brees was already accounting for a $10 mil hit.

I do believe this is to make Jared Cook a huge offer today to outbid the Raiders.

At Drew Brees' age, a dynamic Tight End like Cook is a piece of the puzzle that we MUST have.

At minimum, with the Saints.

As much as we don't want to think about it, eventually the team is going to have to move forward without Brees. With the efforts to try to lock in Bridgewater it appears all involved kind of feel this is the last Waltz.

15.9 dead monies 2020
5.4 dead monies 2021.

Not terrible.

Gives us flexibibility.

Our unused cap rollover will offset some of these numbers but gives us freedom.

I would imagine the cap space is also to allow for a more aggressive offer to Bridgewater.

Cook is not a TE I would give a "huge" offer to.

Fine with it honestly. Our ceiling is much higher with Brees than without and he absolutely deserves to go out on top, especially with the shenanigans that have kept his second Super Bowl elusive during his career.

I’m glad we’re all in this year. Win it all & no questions asked

How can you be a Saints fan and not understand this? This is Loomis 101. Dude loves taking money and moving it to the backend of contracts.

I love how people say this. The guy had the highest passer rating, broke the record for completion percentage, had the most game winning drives at 7, the most comebacks at 6, had 4k yards, 32TD-5Int.

If he plays like this this coming up year, why would we not bring him back in 2020? Who would we get that is better? Either way if we get a veteran QB, we are gonna pay them. Might as well pay one of the most prolific passes to ever play the game.

we should just spread it and create it to be dead money for next 5yrs. I dont see us paying a qb 20m a year for the next few years, thats why i hope we can get TB for 5 yrs 20m now

TLL could’ve milked that hit, he stays down the flag has to come out.
Second, saints got the ball first in OT get a drive started and then turn the ball over.

Can’t blame the refs although the rams didn’t earn it.
Just the voodoo plaguing Louisiana sports at the moment. Hence the aints reference.
