re: Saints restructure Janoris Jenkins; Update it’s a 3 year deal
I’d feel more comfortable taking Delpit if we hadn’t signed Swearinger. He’s nothing but depth but you also have to think they didn’t pay him for nothing

I think the play is CB or LB

I wouldn’t say Delpit is better right now but I definitely wouldn’t mind taking him and letting Marcus Williams walk next year. I defended Marcus Williams for a long time after that dreaded Vikings playoff game but he is no longer a rookie. Don’t get me wrong for the most part he is good in coverage but he doesn’t want to tackle anyone. If you want an example go look at that AJ Brown reverse for against the Titans.

A lot of fans hate on him. Graded VERY strong all three years per PFF

The hate for Williams is not his coverage skills. He is good at playing centerfield. The knock(s) on him are A) He's deathly afraid of contact, not a good trait to for a safety when only elite corners can get a way with that B) his coverage is good in zone, but he does not line up in man coverage against anybody, I'm not sure if he can or cannot but in our scheme he just does not C) He's had some INTs, just never seem to come in the big moment when we need them

But delpit is a safety
We need another corner

And all they did was add more money to future years
I'd love to hear the story of how that negotiation went

That's vastly different, and vastly more logical, take. Competition is good, and it allows a lot of flexibility if Delpit turns into a stud and Williams wants a huge contract. He may want to look at what is going on with Vonn Bell though who is still unsigned.

I think we need another CB, LB, DE and QB.

QB can probably be a minimum deal but the other 3 i'd prefer a solid vet.

Think it's just clearing space to sign all our guys and pay draft picks, while keeping flexibility moving forward.

Don't love Delpit. Had a really bad year although he was dealing with injuries. But there is value at 24 there.

That being said, we saw what happened with Vonn. He was in a pro bowl caliber year and we drafted his replacement, to have insurance in case he walks as well as leverage. Because of this, I wouldn't be shocked if Delpit is the pick. Just wouldn't like it

In restructuring Janoris Jenkins' contract, the Saints lowered his cap number to $4.05M by converting $9M of his pay into a signing bonus, creating $7.2M in space. Jenkins remains a free agent after this season, with the Saints adding two void years.

Weird, why not just extend him or Warford if we needed a little breathing room? Almost seems like a YOLO move is on the horizon.

Can't extend Warford based on his contract. Only choice was to trade or release him

Why? I saw Saints reporters mention a Warford extension as cap savings this offseason.

Sorry, I meant we can't restructure him. He's in the final year of his deal so we can only extend, cut him, or take a pay cut

Jenkins is 31, I think is the right move. We don’t want multiple years on him given how quick these guys can fall off.

I believe We are trying to balance out a win now approach and financial freedom post Brees

Swearinger is a 1 year stop gap, if he even makes the team

Yea, Swearinger isn't in the future plans at all. They're probably hoping that they can milk 1 last year of solid play that he has left in him.

I like the Swearinger signing, but he is what he is.

Also incorrect. We literally just did it with Janoris. Add void years and you can restructure anyone.

Also confused as to how the savings on Janoris add up to $7.2 mil. $9 mil ÷ 3 years = $3 mil a year. $3 mil of that stays on this year, meaning it should have saved $6 mil.

To get that to $7.2 it would have to be also some bonus disappearing (like a roster and/or workout bonus), or it would have had to have been $10.8 mil converted.

It says the dead cap hit will be 7.2 next year

So I think they just added a year
