Saints host WR Rishard Matthews at minicamp ***update*** Matthews signed.

The New Orleans Saints have not been shy about bringing new wide receivers into the mix this offseason, and as their minicamp began, they hosted a veteran at the position.

As the team embarked on their three day practice event on Monday, the Saints hosted veteran wide receiver Rishard Matthews for a try out, according to a report from ESPN’s Mike Triplett.

A former seventh round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins out of Nevada seven years ago, Matthews has played in 87 regular season NFL games with three different organizations.

The now 29 year old played his first four seasons with Miami before landing with the Tennessee Titans prior to the 2016 season, where he had an impact on the offense almost immediately.

In his first year with the club, Matthews had a career high 945 receiving yards and nine receiving touchdowns, both numbers the highest for the Titans that year.

The next season, Matthews had 53 receptions for 795 receiving yards and four touchdowns catching passes from Marcus Mariota. Before the 2018 campaign, Matthews signed a one year contract extension, but would soon request his release from the organization after claiming that he was not used frequently enough in the offense.

In the 2017 season, Matthews played on 749 offensive snaps for Tennessee, 73.29 percent of their total, appearing on over 70 percent of snaps in each of their regular season games. Save for three offensive linemen, Matthews played on the Titans’ second most snaps behind Mariota.

The year before, he played on 782 snaps with the offense, or 73.5 percent of the total, and played in a majority of each game save one, against Houston. In 2016, Matthews played on the third most offensive snaps of any Titans skill player, behind Mariota and running back DeMarco Murray.

Matthews finished his Titans career with 121 receptions, 1,751 receiving yards, and 13 receiving touchdowns before ultimately landing with the New York Jets that October.

His time with that team would be short lived, however, after he had just two catches for 13 yards before landing on the Jets’ injured reserve list in mid December.

In his NFL career, Matthews has 230 receptions for 3,160 receiving yards and has scored 21 total touchdowns while averaging nearly 14 yards per catch.

His best years came in 2016 and 2017, when he emerged as a reliable downfield threat. Now, he hopes to crack a receiver rotation in New Orleans led by Michael Thomas.

The wide receiver position continues to be under some scrutiny in New Orleans this year.

Over the course of last season, the Saints receiving corps was responsible for 2,521 yards in total, a slight decrease from the 2,604 they accounted for the year prior.

That was despite having seven players on the roster compared to five in 2017.

But the position has been trending downward somewhat, after the Saints wide receivers had 3,562 yards in the 2016 season and 3,114 in 2015, both seasons with five receivers.

Still, the team has also been getting good production catching the ball from players at other positions, namely Alvin Kamara, and they are expected to get more from tight end Jared Cook.

Oh hell yea! If he can get his swag back from 2016, he could really be a beast in our offense.

love this and the webster signing.
always said the saints needed to make more of these signings.
you should always bring in vets that have flashed in the past and if they don't, then just cut them.

So, instead of a guy who will likely contribute in 2019, you’d rather keep a practice squad guy who is a project for NFL standards to begin with?
Okay, bud.

Dural isn’t an NFL talent. He wasn’t overly special at LSU either.

I figured they were just goofing around and making that old Saints hate LSU joke. Dural hasn’t shown us anything.

Matthews was pretty awesome in 2017. Only reason I know is because I had him on my fantasy team and he consistently put up 12+ points. This could be a great signing

I'm not fully caught up on roster and transactions, but this seems an insurance move with Meredith still jacked. Matthews has proven to be capable. Dural was expendable for sure.

Rishard Matthews >>>>>> Travin Dural

no brainer IMO. Matthews could actually make the team and theoretically play in every game this season...Dural was most likely going to fight his arse off just to barely make PS again.
