I have seen on here and on some mock drafts where they say we need to draft a safety. I wasn't able to watch any games from the past year so I dont know how our safeties performed. Do we need a safety that bad? Are Bell and Vacarro not good enough? Sorry, I try not to post here but I didn't see this anywhere.

I think it's more of a depth thing on top of Allen liking to use 3 safeties sometimes on the field. Vaccaro also only has a year or two left on his deal.

Bell is an unknown and unknowns are unreliable. Vaccaro, while a good safety, is best suited for playing "in the box" as more of a hybrid linebacker. Having a solid rookie contributor would be very beneficial. There's only two guys I'd really consider drafting with the Saints first pick and that's Adams and Hooker. I don't think the value is there for anyone else at 32 unless they really fall in love with someone

Rafael Bush is a free agent. I'd liked to bring him back on a one year deal.

What about Marcus Williams FS Utah....?

18 turnovers forced, with 11 interceptions over the last 3 years. 6'1 202 LB's coming out as a junior. If he falls at the right spot later...

Xavier Woods from LA Tech would be a solid pick-up with one of our 3rd round picks.

He was real heavy last year and didnt have his best season (220lb) but he cut back down to 200 and performed really really well at the combine.

He is a playmaker. And would compliment Bell/Kenny V's skillset really well.

I also like the Rafael Bush re-signing. Loved the way he played for us and hated to lose him.

I just want to say something here, as this is turning into a "thing" here on Saints Talk. Vacarro is an all around SS, not just an "in the box" type safety. Yes, he makes plays in the box, and that stands out, b/c that's how things work in football. You are more likely to make a play "in the box" where all the action is than back pedaling deep in the secondary. Vacarro can do both really well, and he can play the nickel also. Again, he is an all around good strong safety.

Bell, is not like Vacarro, there really isn't much comparison except maybe in coverage. Bell is more of a FS type player and he is definitely NOT an "in the box" type player. Bell was compared to Jairus Byrd when coming out, which is a good thing, yes, yes it is. Byrd is a pure FS, as is Bell. Bell takes good angles, keeps plays in front of him, and has ball skills. He can play the nickel some, but not as good as Vacarro can. Bell is not really a one on one man coverage type player, he is a free safety type player, which is what he needs to be and how we need to use him. He doesn't have the hips and technique to cover quick, smaller receivers all to well, but he can at least do it when asked and be somewhat ok in holding up.

Sorry, getting tired of seeing Vacarro labeled as only an in the box type safety, and seeing Bell and Vacarro put together like they are identical type players. As to the OP, who knows, I'm sure we will grab a safety at some point in the draft.

Saints could use a true, excel in coverage FS. That was supposed to be Byrd.

Vaccaro is not good in this area and Bell has not excelled in this area as of yet.

Maybe Bell is that guy, and many scouts called him that coverage FS coming out, but it's a lot of pressure on him to take over that role full-time next season when he wasn't great there as a rookie.

I wanted to sign Lardarius Webb or hold on to Byrd, personally.

Yep.

I hadn't heard of the Utah guy before, but from what I'm seeing and reading, I would absolutely love to add him.

May not be the fastest, but a nose for the football and incredibly explosive. That vertical is elite

Adams and Hooker won't even be there at 11.

He's a good safety & a great player, but he is not good in coverage. He's decent on short passes, but he gets torched when he has to cover anything down the field. That's why they mostly kept him around the LOS last year, & why he had his best year since his rookie year.

We really need a guy back there that is good in coverage. Bell could end up being that guy(he was drafted to be that guy), but he hasn't proven it yet. At least Bell is much better in run support than his draft evaluations said he'd be. Bell has all the potential to develop into a legit starter...hopefully he ends up as good as I think he'll be.

He's good in man coverage. He's a very good nickel.

He gets lost in zone at times, especially deep zones and that is where he struggles in coverage.

Manned up though he's pretty good.

The thing I've noticed about Vaccaro is that the further he has to run down the field...the less effective he is.
