Our friends over at The Huddle Report are reporting that Carolina and San Francisco have talked about a deal involving a flip of the 2nd and 8th overall picks at next month’s draft. As far as we can tell nobody else in either the national or local press has picked up on the story so it remains very much in the unconfirmed category. That said, it is a deal that makes some sense for both teams. Carolina, for example, would really like to add an elite edge rusher, but likely won’t have any shot at either of DEs Myles Garrett of Texas A&M and Stanford’s Solomon Thomas, the top two 4-3 outside pass rushers in this year’s draft, at the 8th pick. In fact, Panthers’ head coach Ron Rivera was at the Stanford pro day last week; for the record, that’s a long way for an East coast exec to go at a time when there were other more prominent pro days far closer to home. At the same time, it should be noted that the Panthers would also like to add a big-time RB – Rivera is scheduled to be at LSU’s pro day next week where Len Fournette, this year’s top back will workout – and Stanford also has a pretty good RB in Christian McCaffrey who would be a nice consolation prize if Fournette and Florida State’s Dalvin Cook were off the board. For its part, San Francisco would really like to get a QB with their #1 pick, but its not clear any of this year’s top passers are worthy of the second pick overall. To make matters worse for the 49ers, the positional players who would be value picks at that spot – DEs Thomas and Alabama’s Jonathan Allen – play the same position as both of San Francisco’s last two first-round picks. Move down to #8, though, and a QB makes more sense. Stay tuned!

certainly a plausible move for both parties. i just don't buy into carolina going rb w/ 8 pick. Certainly a need but carolina has shown to go trenches or cb with their priorities in the draft far too many times.

I think this could actually benefit the Saints greatly. Thomas wasn't going to fall to us so it doesn't change the board for DE's. San Fran moving back will make some QB hunting teams nervous though. It also leaves 5 spots ahead of them for chaos to ensue. Would love 2 QB's being selected before us pushing an extra defender towards our pick.

it'd be sweet for jets and niners to be in the qb market above us.

Moving up to take Thomas at #2 would be a mistake for them. He's a 3 tech in the NFL and won't be a polished one day 1. They'd be much better off taking Allen because they're not going to pay both Short and the other guy.

Panthers need a WR opposite of Kelvin Benjamin bigly. I was sure they were going to draft Mike Williams at pick 8. Guess we will see

I have a feeling that this draft will be like 2013 where you don't see a QB go until the teens. Or dare I say, the second round. Too many questions this year.

Yeah he'd have to put on at least 15-20 lbs. to play inside and still would be a bit light.

Plus for a big guy putting on that much weight, it'll take away some of his athleticism, which is why everyone is raving about him.

wouldn't shock me either, just don't see any of these QB as being an obvious 1st round talent but then with no other options and teams being desperate it equally wouldn't shock me to see 4 QB taken in the top 20 with 2 of those being in the top 10

I think Two qb's go top 15. Not sure where hoping one goes early in top 10 and causes the Browns to move ahead of 49ers at 8.

That and teams thinking they can find a Dak Prescott in the third round will push QBs down this year IMO. And there's enough good talent on the board to take instead of gambling on an iffy QB.

Yes he is. He's not a 4-3 end. He's a 3-4 end/ 3 tech.

No, he isn't. He can play 4-3 or 3-4.

He's actually smaller than Cam Jordan was coming out of college by 15 pounds, and everyone projected Cam as a 34 End. Cam's been fine at 4-3 and Solomon is lighter and had better athletic testing in literally every category at the combine. He is very agile.

He will be fine as a 43 End.

He's more Aaron Donald than he is Cam Jordan. He's just not that type of guy. The furthest I'd put him outside is at 5 tech and no further. He's not an edge guy.

Looks like they're planning on LF7 not being there since the Jags will likely take him.

49ers trading back might mean one of the better safeties in the draft like Hooker or Adams might fall.

I don't understand this at all. The only strength of the Panthers is DL, why trade picks for an end when you need DB, OL, WR and other pieces?

I don't know about that.

I'd love for the Saints to get him but from the looks of it he'll be long gone before our turn.

dammit.

1. Possible misdirection
2. They have to pay both their DTs next year if they want to keep them. They can get Thomas and put him at 3 tech.

Either someone is going to reach for him like what you see in this headline or he's going to slide. He's overrated because of his athleticism. He's a very raw prospect.

He can play anywhere but he is definitely an edge guy! What makes you think he can't play DE in a 4-3?
