i keep hearing saints fans talk about how rob ryan loves 1-gap NTs, mainly because he was left with a 1-gap NT from the phillips regime in dallas ( article referencing the issues with NT in dallas)

prior to inheriting the 1-gap talent from wade phillips (who does run a 1-gap 3-4 for sure), rob ryan coached at the browns and oakland. who were his DTs?

i'm trying to look up more info, but the pattern was 2-gap DTs. i think grady jackson ( ) even played there for a bit

Oakland:

2004-2005: Ted Washington. perhaps the biggest example of a 2-gap DT in NFL history

Cleveland:

2008-2010: our own Shaun Rogers. massive 2-gap DT who was possibly the best DT in teh NFL for a year or 2 in CLE

A one gap 3-4 maybe the dumbest defense in all of football. The only positive is its ability to change coverages without having to compromise position but that is about it.

At this point he just has to use what he has. If he doesn't like the one gap dt we have then maybe he can get the 2 gap later. Like next year or something.

i think bunkley is actually a 2-gap NT who just isn't 340 lbs. i believe that's what he played in Denver

i think the concern is hicks, who has no business playing NT in a 3-4

I heard Rob Ryan say that he prefers 1 Gap.

I wish I could find a link to a quote but I can't. So you'll either have to take my word or don't believe me.

But as with any system, all DCs like to have a variety of versatile players that can play more than one scheme. A good one will adapt to the personnel and throw different schemes and looks at people. Despite what people think, even a 1Gap team will ocassionally throw some 2 Gap looks at teams.

Anyway, its part of the reason why we don't need to get killers at OLB...the DLine will be doing a lot more of the pass-rushing in that system than in a traditional 3-4.

I think Hicks can play both 1Gap NT and DE. The Saints have already said he'll be crosstrained at both, but start out as a NT, probably.

quote:

"That hasn't been fully determined yet. But he'll probably begin at the nose, then learn the end position as well, as opposed to the other way around," said Loomis, who is high on Hicks' potential after he showed promise as backup defensive tackle during his rookie season.

Oh one more thing:

In Cleveland he was hired by Eric Mangini, who is a 2Gap guy. So he probably didn't have much of a choice there.

Pretty much everyone thinks he's one of, if not THE best 3-4 DC in the biz. He's just a horrible HC.

Well, i somewhat agree with you here. More of a DE projection, but i think he has the body type, power, and explostion to evolve into a NT. Needs to put on some weight

If you dont think wade is the best then you don't know much. Look what he did in Houston.

yeah he's only had mediocre results in 1 stop as DC (ATL). he's been a badassmotherfricker as a DC everywhere else

he's just not a HC

certainly can do some things there

for sure, but i think he's just a penetrator. IF we do evolve into the 1-gap he could work, but he'd still have to put on some weight, imho

what about oakland?

fwiw, rob ryan is from the belicheck tree

now he can adapt. i'm not saying everyone is wrong,b but his history is much more 2-gap than 1-gap

I mean, he coached under Belicheck, but does that mean he has the same philosophy? Like I said, I heard him talk about 1 Gap.

I know a lot of DCs are shifting to the Wade Philips/Todd Grantham school of 1Gap. Maybe he wasn't in the past and changed his mind? I don't know, but all reports are he will run 1Gap with the Saints.

He ran a 4-3 in Oakland because of Sapp/Ownership. The first year he tried using Sapp some at DE but he bitched and was exclusively a 3 tech DT next to however was the NT in the 4-3.

In Cleveland he actually moved Rogers to DE specifically because he wanted to use him as a penetrater and not a 2-gap NT and it showed as Rogers had a Career year.

Ryan runs a 1 gap 3-4. It's not because he inherited it. Rex run a similar scheme and it's what his dad ran(though from a 46 front).
