Realistic CB options at #28 - Asante Samuel Jr.?

Barring an unexpected slide or a trade up, Surtain, Horn, Newsome, and Farley will be gone by the Saints pick. Is there another CB worthy of pick 28? PFF have Samuel as the 5th rated CB and have mocked him to the Saints.
PFF NFC South Mock
I’m not sure about him, but if not Samuel I don’t think there is another CB past the top 4 that I would take in the 1st. Might be better off picking another position and taking CB in the 2nd.

The Saints will be ecstatic if Samuel Jr. falls to them at Pick 28. He fits what they want to do schematically with their cornerbacks. He can read the game at a high level and jump routes but also has the requisite man coverage skills in a predominantly single-high league. He played mostly outside in 2020 but saw 267 snaps inside the two years prior, so there’s some versatility to his game.
Samuel is not the quickest or faster player, and that’s probably why you can find him available late in the first round, but his brain might be the quickest of the whole group. He loves to bait quarterbacks into throwing on him before breaking up the pass. He forced 22 incompletions over the past two seasons, the second-most in the ACC among cornerbacks.
PFF lead draft analyst Mike Renner ranked him as the fifth-best cornerback in the class, saying, “He undoubtedly got his instincts from his old man as well, as he produced three picks and five pass breakups in eight games this season. What he didn’t get was the elder’s tackling aversion — the Florida State prospect will come up and lay a lick if asked to.”

Samuel would be a solid pic. Barring some FA pickup they somehow like for the #2 CB I think he would be the pick.

If Farley is available I'd rather him, but Samuel would be fine too.

I like the top 4 more with the exception being Farley’s medical checking out. If all four or gone I am probably going with one of the top 4 linebackers. If all of those guys are gone then I’m good with Samuel

Aaron Robinson from UCF can play. Good cover guy and is very physical. Good man press defender that will lay some hits on people.

Secretly hoping Darrisaw falls to 28.

I don’t like him.
He is not a good option for facing Tampa and Atlanta twice a year.
I think he might be the most overhyped corner in the draft to me anyway, which I understand is a worthless opinion.
But I see him getting torn up in coverage against taller receivers.
If the VT kid is healthy, he could be unbelievable. But I still think they can draft BPA if it’s not a corner and pick up one of the two other Georgia corners later.
I’ve seen Campbell climb up mock drafts, so maybe he won’t be there. But Daniel will. And all three of those corners have nfl frames, speed, and played against the best competition.

I can’t imagine the 5th best CB being BPA at pick 28
I think if Lattimore is good to go come fall then a veteran post draft pick up will be fine.
I would like a linebacker or Wide receiver over a CB that gets mocked in the 2nd round.

Samuel will probably go in the 2nd because of his size. I’m fine with taking him there but not with our first round pick. Hopefully one of the top four drop down to us. or Collins.
I thought Robinson is a slot corner? We really don’t need that with CGJ, Robinson and pj Williams playing at that spot. We need someone that can play the outside.

He played slot in college but played physical press coverage so it projected to be able to play on the outside if needed. He would be an ok option in the second

Great tape but can he be anymore than a slot guy in the NFL
5’10”
180 lb
72.25” wingspan
30 1/8” arms
Weight, arm length and wingspan are in the bottom 10%tile. That spells trouble vs Julio, Evans, Godwin, Moore, Anderson, Ridley. You’re talking a lot of bulk, height and weight in the south. Wouldn’t count out Samuel totally but im not sure I wanna find out in round 1

Like Horn(my favorite cb in draft) Asante comes without so many of the questions other players(higher or not) come with.
Is he playing just for that big paycheck?
No. His family has money.
Is he going into the NFL not knowing how its played, how the business of corporate NFL works?
No. He grew up in the NFL since he was born.
Does he have the passion and the drive?
Yes. Because he didn't have to play like so many but because he wanted to and loves the game.
As to size, looking at his film it is not a liability. He has played every position in the secondary there is and he comes down hill and makes tackles.
I just don't see a wasted pick here for a first rounder.

Hope Farley slides, I know there are some medical concerns with him. Same thing helped Lat slide to the Saints.
Would love Horn too just because of his dad.

Jenkins 70 percentile arm length
Samuel 9th percentile arm length

Size is a little overblown when it comes to corners. Sure everyone would like Their corners 6’3” 205 lbs that runs a 4.3 but those guys are few and far between. Instincts, speed, physicality and loose hips can let a 5’10” 180 guy compete with bigger receivers. Guys like JackRabbit have made great careers in the NFL and they are undersized.

Size isn’t overblown when you’re talking about using a 1st on a guy who is small in every measure. Of course there are outliers but you can reference the historical data to mitigate risk. And I like Samuel - But I don’t think he goes in the first.
Janoris Jenkins was 193 lb coming out and had long arms. He’s only below average in height. Donte Jackson is closest body comp to Samuel

I have the same concerns, but there’s a good chance the 2nd tier of CBs (Stokes, Joseph, Melifonwu, etc.) will be gone by the time our 2nd round pick comes around. CB is such a need, I’d hate to come out of this draft without picking up a real potential starter at that position. The FA class (Sherman?) leaves much to be desired.

I like Eric Stokes and Kelvin Joseph at CB too

I would not want to gamble with our first round pick on a guy that exclusively played the slot in college that he will be able to play the outside in the pros when we have 3 slot corners already. Maybe in the second if absolutely nothing else is there that we could use.
