Has it ever really come out why exactly Benson turned on him and fired him? I was pretty young at the time but it seemed to come out of no where, with no real explanation. Then really struggled to find any work in a FO for a number of years after despite being a few years removed from executive of the year. Odd circumstance.

I do remember folks being real upset that we hired a simple bean counter in Mickey Loomis to replace him

If I remember correctly (maybe just a rumor)..But he used Saints money for an abortion of one of Haslett's fun time mistakes... But also heard that Mueller was making deals to trade Deuce without talking to Benson first...

Arthur Blank had contacted him to be the Falcons GM after the 2002 season (I think that was the year) and he was entertaining it. Benson was rightly inflamed. I think Mueller declined the offer but Benson fired him anyway. Benson was always very big on loyalty.

I heard he disregarded/overruled the coaches’ opinion on keeping Joe Johnson, or lied to Benson about how the coaches felt, to support his own desire to get rid of Johnson, who went to Green Bay.

I recall it was largely about Benson repeatedly not getting straight answers from Mueller on all the reasons (football or personal/political) to keep or move on from high profile players. Benson was surprised Johnson went elsewhere or that coaches and front office weren’t in agreement or working together on those decisions.

I had read the main reason is he was making money decisions without consulting Benson. Final straw was the trading of Ricky Williams without consulting him.

While there were rumors at the time that Mueller had dealt the running back without first consulting Tom Benson, he was quick to set the record straight.

“Totally false. Tom knew everything. Tom treated me like a son. He was in the loop on everything we ever did. I had heard that rumor at one point after I had left that they might not have known. That’s not true at all. He knew everything we were doing. Tom was in the office every day. My job was to keep him in the loop and he definitely knew that."

Following the 2001 season, Mueller was offered a contract extension as he was entering the third year of his original 3-year deal.

Shortly after the offer, Mueller was blindsided by Saints’ ownership when Tom Benson asked him to resign. Mueller recalled, “No, it wasn’t mutual at all. He had offered me a contract extension two week after the draft. I had signed a three-year deal when I got there, and I was entering the last year of my contract. He wanted to extend, and I was happy to talk about it. He had made me an offer and two weeks later, out of the blue, he asked me to resign. It wasn’t mutual. I loved it there. My family loved it there. I was totally shocked by the change of events and everybody in the organization was as well. Tom had treated me really good up until that point. I had no issue with him at all.” He then continued, “He did not give me any indication why. He just said that we needed a different management style. I have no idea what he meant by that.

I just gathered my stuff and was gone a few hours later. I think I was just as shocked as everybody else. To go from Executive of the Year and really having them on the right track to dismissal. I would like to say it was knee-jerk, but there was nothing to knee-jerk about.”

3 years with the Dolphins as their GM & then a 11-year stop w/ San Diego Chargers

Ya don't say, too bad he didn't practice it himself. Go research how he got into the car business and got his first dealership.

I don't think "loyalty" encompasses resigning oneself to selling cars for someone else forever. If I were in that business, I'd be looking pretty hard for some kind of equity stake or "piece of the action," and a good businessman expects that.

Why all the downvotes about the rumored payoff? I definitely remember Kenny Wilkerson getting zonked out on painkillers after a serious neck surgery and spilling the beans on another website (wasn't his username Stonewall or something similar with a horse avatar?).

It was something along the lines of a $500K check paid out by the Saints to the cheerleader (either an affair and/or abortion connected to Haslett) without Benson's knowledge. Has this been more or less proven wrong? I always thought this was the main reason.

I did work with a guy who was neighbors with Haslett. Their families (mainly wives and kids) were tight even though Haslett was obviously rarely around due to coaching responsibilities. My coworker said around that time Haslett wasn't staying at his house for awhile. Assumption was marriage trouble.
