PFF: Rankins quietly having a career year

Former Louisville standout Sheldon Rankins earned a 92.6 run-defense grade across his final two years (2014-15) with the Cardinals, ranking third among all defensive interiors with 300-plus run-defense snaps in the two-year span. And while his high-end play against the run propped up his second-ranked 90.8 overall grade, Rankins was far from polished as a pass-rusher at the collegiate level.
Now 1,500-plus defensive snaps into his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints, Rankins is blossoming into one of the league’s top pass-rushing defensive interiors. Rankins’ career-high 72.9 pass-rush grade ranks eighth among the 32 at his position with 225-plus pass-rush snaps through Week 10.

The past 3 games he’s had a play where he just bulldozes his guy into the QB. It’s nuts.

Yeah that sack he had yesterday he pushed the center back like ten yards
It actually looked like he pushed him PAST the QB and then looked to his left was was like "oh shite, there's the QB, better sack him while I'm here"
EDIT: wasn't the center...

I figured in order for our D to take that next step he’d have to play well. And he has

2-3 games into the season I almost made a “I don’t think Rankins is playing up to his 1st round pick thread.” I’ve been high on him and thought he’s played solid but the last 5-6 weeks he has really stepped it up, glad I didn’t make the thread.
Now I’m gonna almost make a “was Kurt Coleman worth it thread”

He’s put a few Olinemen on skates. Glad to see the team finally developing talent. Where it seemed the draft was only a time where I had high expectations about a defensive player, but I also had a lingering notion that he would be a bust.
Can’t wait to see he and Davenport to join Jordan as a wrecking crew.

Even though we're smoking other teams, it kills me that Davenport is out.
I just want to see a healthy DL with experience.

he has been good also at exploding quickly between o lineman like booger mcfarland used to do to get to QB.

Can you make a trequan thread?
Regarding rankins though, I'm glad he's gotten the numbers to support his play. Dude is straight man handling guys.
Donald lite and probably one of the better DTs in the league right now.

Looks like a young La'Roi Glover collapsing the pocket

Lol I’ll consider it. He’s had some good games though, inconsistent play is what I’d expect out of a rookie. I’m just glad he’s had some good to go along with the disappearing acts at times.

I swear I remember someone compared him to Sedrick Ellis after the second game.

I think someone made that comparison early in the game yesterday.

I thought that either Rankins or Vonn Bell would make a nice leap in their 3rd year.
I'm glad it was Rankins. Bell is very legit against the run & blitzing, but he still needs to improve in pass coverage. He's improved (in pass coverage) since his rookie year, but he still needs to get better if he wants a big payday in 2020.
Pretty sure we'll pickup Rankins' 5th year option for the 2020 season. He should get a pretty nice contract in 2021.
