Read this. It’s good.

On the no QB play:
quote:
“Thursday night,” Payton said. “Just doodling. Just thinking. I just thought of it, and I said to the coaches, ‘Will this work?’ And [quarterbacks coach] Joe Lombardi said, ‘Why not? We can do anything we want.’ When I told Troy Aikman about it [in the FOX production meeting], he said, ‘Who’s getting the snap?’ I said, ‘No one. Yet.’ “

favorite part of that article was Sean giving Hill shite on multiple occasions about not fricking up the cadence

That's a fascinating read, thanks for the link.

I'm not a huge Peter King fan either but if you really want to appreciate the preparation the Saints go through the night before a game, you need to read his story linked above. Mad scientists at work. Plural.

Great read. I love how connected the offensive guys are. Even new guys like Carr understand it and learn to thrive with Sean and drew.

16 catches for 200+ yards in one game from 4 guys that in their entire NFL careers have 25 catches combined
this is why we are good, we find ways to exploit every team...Brees and Payton are football geniuses

By that time, the players had all relocated to the ballroom with the food. Except for one player. That player was playing a grand piano—and playing it very, very well.
We looked over, and I asked Payton who it was. “Austin Carr,” Payton said. “Wide receiver. President of his class at Northwestern. He’ll be the president of the United States when he retires.”
Carr played for a while, beautifully. I went over to ask him about playing. “Just relieving some tension,” said Carr, talking while his fingers moved over the keys. He said he loves the music of John Legend. This music is what you’d hear from someone coming out of Juilliard.
“The song’s beautiful,” I said. “What’s it called?”
“I haven’t named it yet,” he said.
This season is gonna make a great movie.

Thank you for posting that. Enjoyed every bit of it. So good I will likely read it again later today.

Yup. They let soy tits hang around to bolster brees’ mvp chances
King is kind of the top guy in the clique of sports journalists.
King is acting like gatekeeper to Brees' MVP chances.

Fantastic article and thanks for sharing. Reading things like this remind me of how different college and NFL head coaches are.
In a salary cap league where parity makes teams almost entirely equal, coaching and game-planning are so huge. Being a successful NFL head coach means being equal parts scientist, artist and statistician.
In college, success is determined by recruiting. In-game coaching decisions and weekly planning matter but not nearly as much as who your players are. This is why so many college coaches can't succeed at the professional level. Nick Saban is great at Alabama but I don't think he understands football at the granular level like Sean Payton or Bill Belichick or Mike Tomlin.

I will get to the news of the day, just perhaps not in the depth that you’re accustomed because so much of my energy this weekend was devoted to something you’re not going to be able to read anywhere else.
The humility...
