“I certainly understand fans asking questions,” Payton said. “I got the guy at freaking Whole Foods asking me about the two-point play. The guy from the meat section. I looked at him and said, ‘Hey, your steaks don’t look too good right now. Worry about your meat. Driving me crazy.'”

Payton seems a little angrier than usual.

quote:

“It was two things,” Payton explained. “I love the play and it didn’t help they missed the line, but there was a personal foul so we can take the kick at the 50. And you can think about pinning them back. You can think even about an onside kick at the 50 or this year they’ll allow you to go and assess it on the two-point play. So instead of running a two-point play on the 2, we’re now on the 1. I knew exactly what we wanted to get to. It was a play we felt real good with.

He should have asked him why he kept trying to run wide at the 49ers all game where every single fricking attempt was a negative yard type play.

I heard the interview on the radio. Payton said the 49ers safety lined up in the wrong place and the motion brought the play right to him.

To be fair, I'm fairly certain none of us have people everywhere we go asking about our job performance. Sure, they know what they've signed up for, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't get tiresome.

I heard that as well.
Still though, running wide right.
Everyone knows Taysom is running right.

personally I disagree with going for two in that spot, but I damn sure wouldn't call Payton out on it while he's grocery shopping.

This is what I don't get. If you're running right up the middle, I get the benefit of being at the 1 vs the 2.

But the play we ran was more of a gadget type play where you're hoping to catch them off guard and/or miss an assignment. it seems that being 1 yard closer mattered a lot less running that play, so I don't get why that would make you want to go for it at the 1 with that play lined up.

I'd much prefer either the direct snap to Taysom or Drew handing the ball off to Taysom going right up the middle. That's not even mentioning at that point in the game the 49ers had already stuffed us on everything going outside.

I don't care if it's Hue Jackson in the grocery. That's a dick move. Let the man have his time off the clock.

And there is your problem. Save that play for 1st and goal at the 1 if you must use it, but don't fricking run a sweep when you only need one damn yard

I'm not letting the butcher at Whole Foods question my work decisions either.

The problem with his rationale is that the play he ran from the 1 didnt really benefit from being a yard closer. It was a sweep which required all the same challenging blocks and risks that a run from the 5 would have taken.

Sounds like he lined up in the right place to me. Maybe next time, if you do think the defender is not in the position you want him, you call time out and don't run that play. I bet the guy at Whole Foods can handle making the right call there and getting his meat right. I love coach Payton but he just needs to admit he screwed up making that call. Heck, I would have preferred they did try the onside kick there after getting the extra point. They weren't stopping the 49er's anyway so the risk of giving them a short field wasn't all that great. I bet the Whole Foods guy could have figured that one out too.
