Payton Needs to Rein in the Taysom Hill QB Experiment

Taysom is great, fantastic, I'm generally confident when he's lined up at QB. And his rushing numbers tend to show it works.

That being said, and I know this isn't a fresh take no one has thought of, but Payton just goes to it way too much and at very inopportune times. We have darn near and arguably the GOAT QB out there, the amount of times we are taking Brees out of the play should be minimal.

Just yesterday:

- We have 4 drives, 4 TDs. On the 5th drive (I think after a couple of 1st downs too) we don't put the ball in Brees's hands and give it to Taysom 2 out of 3 plays in a series including 3rd down. Plays don't work, and we have to punt, again, after going 4 for 4 on TD Drives to start the game. That is the height of stupidity in coaching, it doesn't get much worse than that.

- The 2 point conversion - We can argue all day about whether we should have gone for it or not. I'm ok going, but that call? That call makes no sense. You're generally going to run a play like that down there hoping to catch the D off guard, so the fact that we are 1 yard closer is less relevant than had we run any other play. Plus this 49ers D is so good, and we were getting crushed going to the edges all game, and even up to that point.

- The Fake punt debacle - It's 4th and 18, it doesn't make much sense to have Taysom back in the punter spot to throw to a gunner on a streak route down field. Yes, it should have been holding, but nonetheless, if your entire premise is the guy guarding the gunner won't realize a ball is coming his way, why the heck are you running a streak. Have the gunner run to the sticks then stop, the 49er dude would have reacted so poorly to that since he wasn't expecting it, and Taysom likely finds him wide open for an easy conversion

We were so good on offense and I can't help but think we lost out on another 10-14 points solely because of Payton's infatuation with Taysom Hill.

Disclaimer: I have nothing against Hill at all. I love when he's in there, and I love when he gets the ball...when the timing is right.

No, he needs to let Hill throw more. Teams know he is going to run to the outside 90% of the time.

And let Hill and/or Murray (or both) ram the ball into the end zone during two point conversions. Stop with the Kamara experiment at running back

Exactly this. He had one attempt yesterday (IIRC), but invariably when he is in the game, he will get the ball on a run. Often it works due to play design, but the tendency is evident to everyone. Hill needs more variety to maximize his limed playing time.

No to what? What part of my OP do you disagree with?

When Brees has us with 4 TDs in our 1st 4 drives including 3 TD passes, so you're saying you agree with and want us to take Brees out and throw 2 passes with Taysom in a series?

We did it once yesterday but yes, if we're so confident in Taysom running the ball, then let Brees give him 3-4 handoffs per game and let him run the ball.

I don't like the 3rd down play call, especially running right to Bosa.

Agree the 2 pt conversion call was dumb, give him an RPO if you must use him there.

Taysom made a perfect throw on the fake punt, and Trequan almost made a hell of a catch.

not just the hill plays, i find none of those were bad timing except the 2 point play and the fake punt

but the backfield screens to kamara were so transparent the 9ers were in position for those plays before we even were. they knew 100% those plays were being run before the snap.

i think payton gets lazy with his play call IDs and other teams know the play based on listening to drew call it out at the LOS

It's so dumb that he never used Taysom Hill in the weeks that Teddy Two-Read was our QB and we averaged 13 offensive points per game.

Now that we have Brees and we're scoring over 34 points per game Payton is always eager to take out the 2nd greatest QB in NFL history and put in a 3rd stringer.

I can’t believe he’s not our short yardage RB

Maybe borrow some plays from Frisco or Balitmore with how they use Jackson.

We need to use him more just in zone reads in short yardage. He’s getting a yard almost every time.

Force feeding the ball to Kamara was much more damaging. Every pitch or attempted swing pass to Kamara was a negative play.

Let Taysom do the jump for the TD that Brees does. Why we risk Brees getting injured on a play like that is beyond me. Hill is powerful and I’m sure he has just as good of a vertical as Brees.

i was just thinking that yesterday

kamara cant or isnt willing to do shite so bench him until he can or just use him as a receiver only

let hill run kamaras plays as kamara would and i bet hill is even better at being kamara then kamara is

Or use Murray and have taysom line up as FB and be the lead blocker (if line is out) I think those 2 together would get any short yards we need

Sean needs to just play him at TE now and be done with this Mr Everything, we need him to get touches and we need another TE so problem solved. He can go back to QB next yr, we got Teddy as backup QB

Payton needs to stop taking our greatest we have ever had first ballot hall of fame QB out period! I love taysom too, as anything ELSE but QB. TE, H back, Special teams do it all anything, but not if it means we don't have the ball in Drew's hands.

I don’t think it’s a bad play, but probably not the best idea to run it to Nick Bosa’s side, especially considering how long the pulling guard has to block for.

I’m not reading that wall of garbage but taysom went off against Atlanta. No one was complaining about him then. The niners shut him and kamara both down. They had a solid game plan for those two players apparently. Why jump to a dumbass conclusion after one game?
