I say No........ here’s why:

We still need another draft to acquire 2 or so new starters and provide big depth on the team.

Drafting a QB this year....without a 2nd round pick already.... would cripple this years draft.... probably costing a 1st and 3rd rounder.... THIS YEAR ALONE. Another 1st rounder next year too.

Would be nice to draft Mayfield but he’s not dropping out of the top 10 in the draft so the price is much too high.

Further build the team this year with a few new drafted starters and depth.... CONTINUE GETTING YOUNGER ...... for when we do need to drop a bunch of high draft picks to trade for a new QB !

Just Not This Year.

Give more ammo to Brees and let’s try and win another title before giving up all kinds of draft picks.

I'm to the point where I hope it happens just to see the melt now.

Free Agency is the safest recipe for the "win now" strategy, not the draft.

Last year was a fluke draft where we luckily got 4 (or 5) starters out of it. That hadn't happened since 2006, so depending on rookies for a SB run is a big risk.

I think Sean Payton sees in Mayfield the accuracy of Brees and the moxey & scrappy-ness of Romo. If you find your future QB, you go get him. I may not be totally convinced Mayfield is the next Bromo (Brees/Romo), but SPs opinion is the only one that matters.

The only way SP can draft a future QB and have the luxury to sit him for a year or two, and still try to "win now", is fill team needs in FA. He has basically followed that formula, with certainly even more tweaks to come.

Now, he'll draft his future QB and cross his fingers & toes & heart that one (or all) of those late leftover Rounds 4-7 draft picks turn into a Jahari Evans, Jermon Bushrod, Carl Nicks, Kenny Stills, Marques Colston or Zach Strief. BONUS!!!

At least 3 QBs will be off the board in the first 5 picks. We don't have enough draft picks nor leverage to move up to get a QB worth taking in the first round this year. The only QB I see potentially falling that we could get would be Lamar Jackson and God I hope we do not draft him. A QB that scored a 13 on the Wonderlic and is letting his mom be his agent doesn't seem to me that he has potential of being successful as a QB in the NFL. We are pretty much stuck at 27 unless we trade back ,but it is doubtful that happens as well.

We will be lucky to get 1 starter from this draft, and we will be even luckier if they are a year 1 starter. I see about 15-20 1st round talents in this draft and around 40-50 second round talents. We will get one second round talent, in the 1st round, and then after that there is a huge drop off.

It is highly likely that no one we draft this year will be a heavy contributor in 2018.

I've warmed up to Lamar Jackson. Our offense will look different, but can you imagine having to account for Kamara, MT, and LJ making plays with his legs?

And he would have the benefit of sitting behind and learning from the GOAT. Most of the wash-outs (Vince, RGIII, mariotta and Winston) never had that luxury.

Hard pass on any running qb. It’s just been proven over and over and over again to not be successful long term.

My problem with LJ is that he is highly inaccurate outside the numbers to the sidelines, and the sidelines-back shoulder throw is a huge piece of the Saints' offense.

Not only is there plenty of game tape of this major flaw, but LJ was recently over-throwing sideline routes by 10 feet high at his pro day, against no defenders.

It's really a deal-breaker, unless we draft a WR with a 10 ft vertical.

All indications were that the Saints wanted to draft Mahomes last season. While not completely the same player, of the top QB's available, Mayfield is probably the most like Mahomes (absent the incredible arm strength). Now the Saints (probably unexpectedly) hit a grand slam with last year's draft and became a super bowl contender. Maybe that changes the thinking towards going all in for the next two years vs. planning for the future.

However, the Saints know they will need a new QB much sooner rather than later. If they love Mayfield, then it's time to get your future QB now because 2019 looks like a dogshit QB class.

Technically it doesn't "cost" you a first rounder this year. You are just flipping 1st round picks with another team. However, it almost assuredly would cost a 3rd and next year's 1st. So you're right, this draft would basically be spent on a guy who you don't want to see the field for another 2 years (minimum)

So it comes down to how much the Saints really like Mayfield. If they think he is a future star, they you don't want to pass on him and be kicking yourself two years later when Brees is gone. But you also have to be sure that the team as it stands now is good enough to compete for a Super Bowl without adding any top 100 rookies to the mix.

Payton has never been averse to trading up to get a guy he wants badly (Cooks, Kamara, Ingram). IMO, if Mayfield makes it past 5, the Saints are paying the price to jump into the top 10 to get him.

Nice post. Agree 100%. I read this after my post on Mayfield thread, wrote a lot of the same thoughts, but edited some.

Should have just read yours first.

We don't have a boatload of meaningful draft picks this year, you'd definitely have to give up a 2019 number one, and perhaps next year's number 2. Do we really want to do that? For me it would be worth it for a slam dunk QB only, not the group coming out this year.
