If you’re a New Orleans Saints fan, this is where your stage of sleep goes from just dozing off to the start of the worst nightmare ever. This is where all the good feeling Brees has brought to New Orleans since 2006, and especially since the start of the 2009 season, disappears. This is where the Saints go from being the elite team they’ve been the past few years back to the mediocrity that was their trademark through almost their entire previous existence. This is where Chase Daniel takes the first snap of the season at home against the Washington Redskins on Sept. 9 and starts through the regular-season finale Dec. 30 at home against Carolina.

This is the land of 8-8, or maybe even 6-10.

Take Brees away from the Saints and you have the Jacksonville Jaguars. Wait, at least the Jaguars have Blaine Gabbert. Yeah, he was terrible as a rookie, but there were at least some reasons why he was a first-round draft pick.

Daniel doesn’t have Brees’ arm, experience in the offense or his magic. Yeah, I know there’s a school of thought that says you could throw any quarterback out there with the likes of Jimmy Graham, Darren Sproles, Marques Colston, Devery Henderson and Lance Moore and he’d do just fine.I don’t buy it. Daniel could get the Saints through a game or two (maybe a little more if Payton were around) if Brees were banged up. Brees could get the Saints through a season without Payton.

Chase Daniel has nothing on Dave Wilson, Richard Todd, Heath Shuler, Billy Joe Hobert, Billy Joe Tolliver, Danny Wuerffel, Wade Wilson, Doug Nussmeier and Mike Buck.

Drew sitting out the year would blow chunks...but Chase would be a lot better than the national media types would have you believe.

Saints go 12-4 w/Brees 10-6 w/CD

Really? I actually like Chase but I don't see us winning more than 8 with him as our starting QB. I think the attitude will be similar (not as bad though) as Indy had without Manning last year. Not to mention Payton not being there and our interim head coach gone for half the season.

That's a lot for a first time starter to overcome.

Agreed. I think we could still manage 9 wins with Chase. And as horrible as it would be to waste an entire season while Drew sat out, getting a Matt Barkley would pretty boss to set us up for the future ala the Colts

I think if Brees were to go down there would only be a couple back-ups worthy of running this offense and Daniel is at the top of that list. Im not just being biased but he has been in the system for a while now and is definitely sitting behind and has a good relationship (Yes I'm going to say it) one of the best and most accurate QB's to every play in the NFL. No doubt not having Payton there would hurt those chances but 1) Pete can step in and mentor him to an extent and 2) anyone who actually think SP and someone from the offense will not be in contact at some point during the season is just naive. I think Daniel is good under pressure and has the arm strength and accuracy to lead a very potent offense and a revitalized defense to a 9-11 win season. It would take a lot of work and some balls to bounce our way but that is the same for Brees. I feel comfortable with Daniel as our back-up for now and WHEN Brees gets his money and shows up to prove why he got it, Daniel will be waiting in the background to get his chance.

Matt Barkley

I was wondering the other day...Say (for heaven's sake I'm not hoping this happens and would probably go into a deep drepression if it did) Brees goes down for the year or sits out...Saints go 3-13 and is in the top 3; how big of a discussion would it bring on during the next offseason about the Saints taking Barkley? Would it make as much headlines as Luck and RG3 did? Would Brees embrace the young QB and teach him the ways of the Jedi?

NO

frickING

WAY

IN

HELL

dude you're saying Drew Brees is worth only 2 games over a guy who has had insanely limited playing time in the NFL. With our schedule. If this was the case there is no way we would even consider resigning brees at 18,19,20 million a year. We would tie Daniel up at a very reduced rate, let him improve significantly with playing time and spend the Brees money getting big upgrades at other positions.

I dont think he is merely saying Drew is only worth two more games. The Saints are not looking to retain Brees so they can win 2 more games this year than if Daniel was under center. Brees is a multi-year investment that is worth the money he will get. The theory of Daniel coming in for one year and playign well enough and getting some lucky breaks to win 10 games is not so far fetched.

I respectfully disagree. Our ceiling with CD as our qb is 8 wins in my opinion and that is if ALOT of things go our way. Any way you cut it he said we win 2 more games with Brees than Daniel this year.

Yes, but I could be wrong but I dont think he was implying Brees is no better than 2 games. I for one do not agree with that. I do think Daniel is worth 9-10 W's if he plays with the potential I think he has.

Would Brees sitting out affect his pursuit of the Unitas record?

I dont think it would. It counts for games he plays in I believe. He sat out for a couple games in the past few years and yet he still is on track for the record.

I think you're underestimating how good Drew Brees really is...

I agree that Brees is worth more than 2 more wins, but in my mind if Brees doesnt play with our schedule this coming year, CD can lead us to 9 wins and I will elaborate with a game by game break down...

1. Redskins-W, In my mind RG3 is going to take more time than Luck to transition to the NFL and I believe Luck will take a whole season at least.

2. @ Panthers-L, Scam Newton most likely will be bitten by the 2nd year slump, but CD has a terrible game in week 2 and the defense gives up just enough for the panthers to win by 10.

3. Chiefs-W, Pete C lights a fire under CD's arse after his atrocious week 2 performance and the defense reveals the weaknesses of a new offense in KC.

4. @ Packers-L, I think everyone would agree with me here. CD is just outplayed by Rodgers.

5. Chargers-W, The Saints are one of the teams who have had success against SD as of late and I think CD squeezes one out here late in the 4th.

6. BYE-W, I think our BYE week comes at a great time this year.

7. @ Bucs-W, I do not think TB is going to very good this year. I live in Tampa and all the radio shows here are not confident in their new coach plus lots of Bucs fans do not trust Freeman.

8. @ Broncos-L, Manning is in mid season form by this point and outplays CD.

9. Eagles-L, I do not believe the Eagles will have the season some of their fans think they will have, but I do think they have enough talent to come to NOLA and take a game from CD.

10. Falcons-L, Lets face it with no Brees the Failcons take the NFC South as well as both games from the Saints.

11. @ Radiers-W, Carson Palmer has not been fully healthy in some time. Although he threw for a ton of yards in his short tenure with the team last season I think OAK will be at the bottom of the league with the Bucs and Jags.

12. 49ers-W, The Saints will be waiting for this game all year long and new DC Spags will know the right formula to tear Alex Smith apart. No matter who is under center for the Saints in this game, expect another preseason performance that we witnessed last season.

13. @ Falcons- As Ive said I think Matt Ryan is a good QB and with no Elite Brees in the mix he takes the divison and both games from the Saints. I just know he chokes in the playoffs.

14. @ Giants- The Giants have lost a lot of talent this offseason, but for picking late in every round of the draft they came out looking healthy. They take this game because its mid-winter in Jersey.

15. @ Cowboys- Dallas is another team the Saints have ahd success against. Even the first loss of the season in 09 was a very close game we really should have won. I think this the game of the year where CD is on his game and gets some breaks to steal a game from the Cowboys who as much as I hate to say it will be at the top fo the NFC.

16. Bucs-W, The Bucs are terrible at this point and are thinking about Barkely in the draft to replace Freeman. Look for Freeman to be with the Dolphins, Chiefs, or Browns in 2013.

Hope it isnt too much to read but I feel strongly about it. CD has potential and I think has the skills and brains to be a decent starter in the league very soon.

It's not just the loss of Drew Brees. It's the loss of Payton who is the de facto QB coach, a new defensive coordinator, new defensive players and an interim head coach that won't be around until week 7.

Add in the fact that Chase Daniel hasn't ever started and played a full NFL game.

Add in the fact that Drew is the leader of this team.

Add in the fact that Vilma was the leader of our defense and he's gone as well.

Do you seriously think Chase Daniel can galvinize this team behind him to win nine games?

I like CD as much as anyone. More than a lot like him actually. I think he's got that "it" you need to be a good QB. That being said, 9 wins is a lot to ask without Drew Brees.
