The 'mastermind' of the defensive line: How Sheldon Rankins plays a key role for the Saints LINK … via @theadvocateno

I mean there's probably a lot of truth in there about Rankins being smart and all that stuff but just comes off like a fluff piece for a lack of production. We still need production and Rankins gets dominated a lot in 1 on 1's.

so, he's not a bust now, right?

I've never declared him a bust but i do think we could be expecting more out of his production. He's not getting the volume of double teams that some posters have acted like he's getting. I just hope he keeps getting better. I expected a bit more this year with a healthy offseason under his belt.

Hard to judge him when a key to his success would have been playing next to Fairley. Fairley is the space eater while Rankins is the pass rusher. He's been eating a lot of double teams though and the line is getting good pressure.

I agree, but the first few games he was.

Green Bay he was matching up 1v1 more often and we didn't get the numbers and he didn't do so hot. He needs to improve and step up another notch like cam Jordan does routinely

If he can generate pressure, that's honestly good enough for me, sacks are a plus. Hell him generating pressure for a DE to nab sacks works just as well. He might not be a top tier guy like Aaron Donald or Geno Atkins, but an above average DT isn't easy to find.

Deuce Windham dropped a film study on Rankins today too, and he said basically the same thing: he's dominating in the middle

DT is one of the positions that is almost impossible for the average fan to judge if they aren't getting "numbers".

Sometimes they are dominating the middle for other guys to get numbers.

I haven't done any film study or anything like that, so I defer to those that have.

which is why the question was posed last week and i admitted so i haven't been following every play of rankins. I did pay a bit more attention to him last week. He probably had his best game of season and made some plays. Also plays that were less than impressive too but i guess that's the nature of the D line. I mean, we can sit here and call it a film study, pick out 8 plays we want to watch over and over and call it a great game but....

I thought it was fitting that the play they used for the picture showed Daidson being held.

It is hard to say what type of season Rankins is playing without watching every play. But, he is having a positive affect on the d-line. And wether or not he's facing 1-on-1 or double teams, he's at least keepng out LBers clean.

Rankins would benefit big time with Fairley next to him. He put up some good numbers at the end of last season.

yeah. Fairley really elevated his game to that next level. And Davidson is playing good ball too, Fairley just had that pocket pushing presence, got up field quick.

Is Rankins going to be the new fall guy for you now?

Since Morstead was put on that GOAT punter list in the off season? I admit it is hard to hate now.

Edit: pardon me.

What's the word on Fairley. Is he ever playing football again?

Nah. I'm having open conversations about Rankins. I watched the 26 minute video above with open eyes. I am rooting for Rankins. Rankins was a very high pick, expectations are high as well.

Brian Baldinger aka Baldy has been singing Rankins' praises the last few weeks. He put out this tweet the other day

He called Rankins a young stud last week. This is a guy who is actually watching game film end to end

I think that our lack of pass rushing statistics against GB had more to do with wanting to keep Hundley in the pocket and forcing him to throw instead of crashing the pocket, letting him break contain and go for big gains with his legs. That seems to be the best game plan to employ against Cam Newton and we seemed to have played Hundley similarly.

I'd love to add that Clemson DT Christian Wilkins to our line next year, give Rankins some help. With that said, Rankins has been a monster and really letting our backers make plays.
