NFL exec says Malcom Brown signing is among the league’s best

Coming into the offseason, the New Orleans Saints knew they were going to make a move at defensive tackle with the sudden depth issue surrounding that position right now.
That move came when the organization signed Malcom Brown away from the Patriots and to a three year contract worth a reported $15 million when the league year began.
Looking over the many transactions that have already taken place in a busy NFL offseason, one front office executive took particular note of the signing that brought Brown to New Orleans.
In conversation with Sports Illustrated, the unnamed decision maker said the Saints made one of the best additions by any team in the league this year.
“A handful of teams did real well,” the executive said. “Haven’t seen official numbers, but if the reports are true, [I] really like the value of Malcom Brown to New Orleans. Really good underrated player. Very consistent. Solid three down ability, on a championship team, and may have some rush upside.”
Brown was a former first round selection made by New England out of Texas in the 2015 NFL Draft, and the player has been with the Patriots organization for his entire career until now.
In his 60 game NFL career, Brown has started 51 contests, recording 186 tackles, 8.5 sacks, has forced one fumble, and has recovered three others.
Brown is a two time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots, where he developed a reputation as among the most consistently productive run defenders in football, if he also leaves something to be desired when asked to pressure against the quarterback.
Brown joins a run defense that this past season ranked No. 2 overall in the National Football League and for a team that is on a short list of those expected to compete for Super Bowl LIV.
New Orleans allowed just 3.6 yards per rush, 1,283 total rushing yards, 12 rushing touchdowns, and 80.2 rushing yards per game this past season.
The Saints came into the offseason hoping to add a player at this position given that starter Sheldon Rankins is still recovering from the Achilles tear he suffered during the NFC Divisional Round victory over Philadelphia, and the likelihood of David Onyemata starting the season on suspension because of an offseason arrest.
Already this offseason, there are many credible reports which state that Rankins will almost certainly begin the 2019 season on the physically unable to perform list.
These developments inspired head coach Sean Payton to admit that the Saints will be looking into the defensive tackle position during the free agency period and in the NFL Draft.

Not yet. Roberton's deal was the last to be added by overthecap or spotrac. LINK
2019 cap# - 1.7 mil
2020 cap# - 2.4 mil...2020 dead money hit - 650 k.
Bridgewater, Malcolm Brown, Mario Edwards, & Nick Easton aren't on either website currently. Shouldn't be much longer though.

Is there a timetable for rankins return?

Nobody can give you an accurate answer. At this point...I'd say middle of the regular season. Pretty sure that you have to sit out at least 8 weeks if you're on PUP. Not sure how it goes exactly though.

Yeah I think it will be right around 8 games also.
He will start the year on pup more than likely.
I don't see why they wouldn't put him on it

The whole league knows the Saints were a Super Bowl team last year.

PUP is 6 weeks, so if he starts on PUP he'll only play 10 games max.
Now that doesn't mean he'll be ready after 6 weeks. It's a bitch of an injury to come back from, and even when healthy enough to play you still aren't near 100% for another couple of months or so.

Players on the PUP list may not practice or play the first six weeks of the season. After the sixth week, the player must be allowed to return to practice, placed on injured reserved or released within five weeks.
If the player returns to practice, the team has three weeks to decide to place him on the active roster or on the injured reserve list.
Players on the PUP list do not count aginst the 53-man roster, but do count against the 90-man roster limit.

NFLPA Salary Cap site is always more accurate because it is updated daily by the the NFLPA. They show us with over $18k available still....

That's $18 mil, not k.
Also looks like the Falcons are hardest up on the cap with $4.9 mil in space.
But just because the report is generated daily doesn't mean it's "accurate". Sometimes teams delay making contracts official while moving space around.
So while it is literally up to date with the money on the books, it doesn't take into account agreed upon but unsigned/submitted contracts.
That's why places like overthecap are better because they show you exactly who is being accounted for.

Just for instance, overthecap shows us at 54 players and $19.6 mil in space, while the nflpa shows us at 55 players and $18.5 mil in space (I'm assuming Mario Edwards is on the books for about $1.1 mil and just not shown/accounted for on otc; Crawley, Robertson, and Banjo are all accounted for).
But what you won't know by looking at the nflpa site is that it doesn't account for the Bridgewater, Brown, or Easton contracts as none of them have hit the books.
So our actual cap space when taking them into account will be much less.
