In 2017, Saints tied for the division with Carolina, we won the seed because of tie-breakers. Atlanta was just one game behind. Division was the only one to have more than one team with 10 wins or more, and we had 3.

This year, with 2 games to go, the Saints have a SIX game lead in the division. No other division team will have a winning record, and it's very likely they will all have losing records.

I thought that was interesting, to see how the division went from probably the toughest in the NFL to maybe the weakest, in one season, without a ton of player changes.

Carolina is talented but have been very inconsistent.
Atlanta caught the injury bug early. Pretty much it in a nutshell.

Thats the nfl. Teams rising and falling. Happens all the time. Part of the reason i ignore the “toughest schedule” arguments before each season

The south is far from the weakest. This is a down year, but Carolina and Atlanta are not bad teams.

Even earlier this season, some analysts were touting the NFC South as the toughest division. Then Atlanta started racking up the injuries, the Fitzmagic ran out in Tampa and Carolina collapsed.

There were plenty of player changes for whatever reason, but this is why preseason "strength of schedule" means jack shite. Teams can swing wildly from one year to the next.

And I definitely wouldn't call the NFC South the weakest division this year. While the other teams have losing records, most of their losses have been competitive. And I'm sure if you added up wins and losses for all divisions we still wouldn't be the worst.

And the division sent a team to the SB the years before that.

We had one of the toughest divisions in football for the better part of a decade.

Parity in the NFL is, outside of the AFC East, amazing.

The Saints have finished 4th in the division just once under Sean Payton, with an 8-8 record. That same record would have won the division in 2014.

Can you imagine how good the Panthers could've been the last few years if they had a competent leader and motivator as a franchise QB instead of a whiny little selfish bitch?

A QB can do pretty damn well there:

CMC
Funchess
Moore
T Smith
Samuel
Wright
Olsen

Imagine someone like Mayfield there

That would be two really tough games each year. The idea of having a cakewalk division like the Patriots have to go through every year might seem cool, but I like competitive football games. Watching these teams go to war against each other when they are all playing well is much more fun to watch.

NFC south teams outside of the Saints, are talented with very mediocre coaching. That’s the difference. Change out Rivera, Quinn or Koetter with a great coach and they would be dangerous.

I think there are a couple of factors at play here.

1) Injuries----Atlanta suffered several especially on defense right out of the gate. Carolina was 6-1 at one point and then Newton got banged up and has been limping through. The Saints have miss a few players, but had enough depth to move on.

2) Schedule Changes---NFC South played the AFC North and NFC East this season.

Saints------------NFC East 3-1, AFC North 3-0
Panthers----------NFC East 3-1, AFC North 2-2
Falcons-----------NFC East 2-2, AFC North 0-4

NFC North and West---Saints 2-0
Panthers 0-2
Falcons 1-1

So overall Saints 8-1 with 1 game remaining
Panthers 5-3, Falcons 3-5

So I went through and added all of the wins in each division together (ties count as half) and this is their ranking:

AFC West - 31
AFC South- 30
AFC North- 29
NFC South- 28
NFC North- 28
NFC East - 27
NFC West - 26
AFC East - 25

So the main thing to take away is that no division is truly dominant nor shitty. 6 wins separates the best from the worst.

We fall dead in the middle, and are 3 wins behind the top and 3 above the bottom.

Even with two 11 win teams, the AFC West is only 1 win ahead of the AFC South.
