I think the guy is a great punter, but are we overpaying for this position?

He is has the 4th most guaranteed per year at $1,154,167 and is under contract until 2019 (why his total value is so high).

Seems silly to pay a punter this much money when you can get a pretty damn good one of the street. I guess you're paying for the trust.

No doubt he's great at his job, but I'd rather have that money put towards a free agent (can't really cut him for 2 years now)

Maybe you should be doing Loomis's job instead.

Why do you post here if you don't want to have a discussion on these type of things?

It is what the NFL offseason is about jackass

If I'm reading that right we have passed the years with the most dead money and after next year it looks really good.
It seems we are almost passed the worst(guaranteed money) and if he has a long career he could be good value going forward.
A redo after 2015 looks likely as well.
I think he has been and will be worth the money going forward.

I agree, no way he sees past 2015 with the current contract.

His cap hit jumps up another million after next year, but we can save $3.25 million if we let him go/restructure

I think he's worth it

He is also one of the best punters in the league. Field position is everything in the NFL and having someone like Morstead who can pin teams deep is invaluable.
I don't agree at all with " you can get a pretty damn good one of the street"
Look how that is going for us in the kicker category.

I think we overpaid him b/c of the pictures you posted. I don't think the market would have paid him that

We signed Hartley to a 5 year contract and took a 2+ million hit to cut him this season.

He made $2.7 million last year, and punters =/ kickers. At least Morstead has earned his money

Saints paid him because he is one of the best at doing what he did in those pictures, along with the touch backs on kickoffs and pinning opponents inside the 10 yard line on punts.

You will not find someone off the street that can do all that consistently....

Field position is extremely important to Payton and Morstead greatly affects that, especially with the new kick off rules and moon shot deep punts.

I do agree that $3m per is high for any part time player though. But at least he is one of the best at what he does.

Mike Scifres at
Punter
$3,250,000
3
Brandon Fields at

4
Dustin Colquitt at
Punter
$2,950,000
5
Sam Koch at
Punter
$2,200,000
6
Thomas Morstead at

$2,185,000

And when we pick up some guy off the street and pay him 750k, he starts shanking a few and people are going to be calling for his head

pretty much this.

In a position that can either screw you over big time or screw the other team over, paying a premium for a player that is arguably top 5 is not bad of an idea.

We ranked overall 6th in punting @ 46.9avg. 61 punts this past year, 25 have been inside the 20, 5 have been touchbacks, 12 fair catches, 24 punt returns for an average of 7.5ypr (top 7)

I don't doubt that he's one of the best in the NFL.

What was the reasoning for cutting Weatherford?

Like against Seattle and Carolina?

Yes, he does, at a very underrated position.
