MMQB: Saints #27 pick

27. NEW ORLEANS—FRANK RAGNOW, C-G, ARKANSAS
My surprise of the first round. The Saints could use a center with some position versatility. Max Unger is 32. Right guard Larry Warford will play this year at 31. The Saints are in an interesting position. They for once have no crying need entering the draft and can afford to draft, say, a sixth offensive lineman who could start in 2019 or 2020 at guard or center. Ragnow has time in the strong SEC at both center and guard, and the Saints think he’s the kind of brute-force player (with some athleticism) who could start for them for a few years.

I'd rather go with Jaire Alexander, Will Hernandez, or even Billy Price before Ragnow

I like Price a lot more. He’s going to be a beast.
Ragnow seems more versatile though. Either one could be a blessing in disguise. Warford missed time as did Peat and Unger has known foot issues.

nfl.com compared Price to LeCharles Bentley

You've scouted tape of the 3 interior OL?

you referring to Alexander? he's a CB who would make a great #2 opposite Lattimore

Ragnow plus Price and Hernandez equal 3.

I've seen some games, but this is the first mock I've ever seen that has Ragnow in the first round

He’s wrong about Larry Warford’s age. Warford will only be 27 this year. He was born in June 1991

It's like he had us making that pick just so he could say "here's my surprise pick for the list." No way we pass up Hayden Hurst, Christian Kirk, or Vander Esch if they are there at 27.

Ragnow has been getting talked up a lot more lately which is more these "gurus" finally finding out the NFL likes someone instead of some last second rise. Mayock said he'd be a surprise first rounder on pardon my take.
I wouldn't mind Ragnow.
Wynn
Ridley
Ragnow
Alexander
Hurst
Josh Sweat

Wait, Warford isn't 31 is he? I thought he was 26/27?

I decided a few weeks ago that this will be my prediction for the draft. Maybe not Ragnow, but one of either Ragnow, Price or James Daniels. I personally lean Price just based on the talent, draft value and the OSU connection.
In my opinion, interior OL depth is one of the biggest needs on the team. We have several injury prone OL. We have shuffled a lot of OL around the last two years. With Kelemete gone, this team is 1 injury from a disaster. Price can play C or G. He played at OSU so he will be very pro-ready. And if we want, we can cut a 33-year-old Unger next year for a pretty nice cap saving and replace him with a young Price.

I agree. Price would be a good pick. The board would probably melt.
The 1st round could go any position except Rb, k, p, and maybe safety.

Ragnow looks to be a guy the scouts really like, but the media had little information on. I don't think the Saints have OL significantly on their radar in the first round and probably want another position player moreso than OL. That said, by the time we get to #27, all the other higher ranked position players on their overall board may be gone. That seems to be what happened last year at 32 when they were left to take Ramczyk. That move was blessing in disguise as he and Unger were the only two O linemen to start every game.
You can never have too many good offensive lineman. Unless there is a skill/defensive guy who they love much more at 27, I think the Saints would be fine with taking a guy that can add depth to the interior OL and play multiple positions. 5 years ago that probably wouldn't have been the play for the front office

I just don't see the value for the Guard need in the 1st round. We have a more urgent Center need than Guard need but Unger can be here 2 more years if needed. We need depth but i'm not sure at the cost of the 27th pick. I'd still say there's a better case for value pick for this roster at OT than interior OL this year in 1st round.

If that's what they want, they possibly trade down. None of those targets will be taken at that point.
Also, that's probably the spot where teams start looking at Lamar Jackson or one of the DTs that fell. That's also about the time it's expected that the WRs come into play.

OL is the unsung position of need.

Yeah but Larry Warford sounds like the name of a 70yr old so they just tack on a few years to his age

Price would be the future to takover for Unger, but his versatility would help as swing player on the offensive line now. He would be the 6th olineman plus he'll take over for Unger whose 32 and under contact till 2019.
