I would think by many of the same human traits that bother refs.

?

Who are the people who harass you and who you equate to those harassing referees?

At youth, playground, and high school events, the abuse from shitty parents is out of control. Existing laws should address that

I don’t disagree with the fact that there are assholes running amok. I don’t see why sporting events need their own punitive measures if our actual laws are enforced.

What job is harassment proof?

You brought up your job in response to my post. I reasonably assumed that you equated your work with that of a referee for youth sporting events, i.e., people who are singled out for verbal abuse and possibly physical assault by strangers because of an amateur game.

If my assumption was wrong, then I don’t get your point. In an employment scenario, there are laws that protect you against harassment, discrimination, wrongful termination, etc.

A referee and an abusive parent don’t have a legal relationship.

What kind of special legal status do you wish to place upon refs that I don't already have in dealing with the consequences of any abusive person?

JFC

Criminal and civil statues are passed all the time to address a specific wrong, perhaps with enhanced penalties beyond those normally applicable. I happen to think it’s a good thing to discourage obnoxious, abusive family members and others at a youth sporting event from acting abusively toward volunteer officials.

It doesn’t mean they’re a protected class with special legal status.

I think everyone would like to discourage bad behavior I'm just cautious in passing laws to achieve it.

I agree Ice. It’s mostly dindunuffins and a specific law will help put teeth into stopping this stuff. No one wants the responsibility because they don’t know the law. So, the facility doesn’t protect the officials because they’re usually scared of the loud mouth offenders.

Beyond out of control. We are losing good officials every day because of the shitty fans.

I cannot believe the majority of the posts in this thread ignore the reality that this is clearly geared at the high school/amateur level. Not everything is a Goodell conspiracy.

anyone whose actions cause a school or recreational game official to "fear for safety," particularly during a sporting event or near the venue.

If applicable to the nfl refs, they could arrest almost everyone in the Dome

There's a lot of research that shows that people rarely read beyond headlines.

Not in my experience. Most of the threats and harassment I've received as a football official have come from suburban moms and dads (no comment on race, this has come from people from all backgrounds - just definitely not those you'd think of as dindus).

This is really needed for adult rec leagues. Some of these young thugs think they can just bully the refs for making a call they thought was bad. Just ruining the league for all who enjoy playing it. In the Covington adult league about a year ago one dude just blatantly went after the ref and started swinging.
