If anything, this defense is the worst yet.

We made Minnesota look like fricking worldbeaters and they play Pitt and suck. Brady looks like shite against the Chiefs and has one of his best days ever against us.

How can we be worse? We lost Fairley and Breaux but seem to have upgraded elsewhere.

Kikaha/Okafor aren't very good but they're better than Krueger.

Klein has to be an upgrade to Laurinitis.
Lattimore is better than Crawley.

Do we actually miss fricking Byrd?

Allen is a really shitty coordinator is my conclusion.

I think Byrd was actually pretty good last year and covered up for Vaccaro's terribleness. He's an abysmal cover safety and Williams is a rookie so he can't really help him out too much.

the remaining constant is Sean Payton, period. With a soft offense comes a soft defense in most cases.

I imagine it is Sean Payton's patented play 15 yards off the receiver and get checked down to death defense.

I think it's a combination. At this stage it is more scheme than lack of talent IMO. In the past it was definitely talent, but we've poured a shite ton of resources into the defense the last 4-5 years and I just don't believe that every single one of these guys sucks. They're not being coached right, they are being put into bad positions due to scheme, etc.

Malcolm Jenkins and Akiem Hicks are great examples of talented players (ballin elsewhere) that they couldn't properly develop or use here. Kinda expecting the same for Vaccaro.

I don't see what made Allen a hot commodity. Payton's record minus GreGG Williams is now at .500. Can all of these coordinators be that crappy? Spagnulo and GreGG have both continued successful DC jobs. I'm wondering if it is on Payton. Does he not let them "do their job"? It has to be more than just bad luck picking coordinators to have so little success over that many years. All the more so when considering the free agent and draft stock capital that has been invested in the D.

No way anyone could convince me this team is devoid of talent on defense. Nobody is that bad at drafting considering every fricking year almost the entire draft is devoted to that side. It's coaching and scheme without question. How many DCs has Sean Payton been through here? We had 2 decent defenses and that's about it. The only constant is Payton. Allen is fricking awful for sure but at some point the HC has to be held accountable for well over 10 years of failure on the defense. I can about guarantee if we had a higher profile guy coaching this defense like Wade Phillips you'd see a top 15 defense with what they have now.

With the difference in personnel and the difference in coaching over the Payton era, all arrows point to one common denominator. It's not like Sean Payton isn't trying to fix the defense, it just hasn't happened.

And now they are a predictable, trick pony offense that only gets yards in garbage time when it's too late.

The star has faded.

spot on, we don't have the best D in the league but we have all the talent needed to field a dominant defense.

the biggest issue here is allen needs to be removed, and before the next game even, but payton will keep him until forced at gun point to fire him just like the last group of bum coaches

Both. In our front 7 Cam is the only player who we can say with certainty wouldn't be just a rotational piece somewhere else.

Problem is SP doesn't care about the defense. The whole team's mindset is if we a just okay on D, then we win because of the O. You have already lost with that mindset. SP always wastes some picks on an offensive toy or the flashy DB. He has not shown a real desire to build from the inside out.

Agreed. Look at the snap counts from yesterday. Almost zero rotation. Obviously CSP and Loomis are horrendous at evaluating defensive talent, but Allen is giving whoever we trot out there almost no chance of succeeding.
