Hello again, Who Dats & Who Datettes and welcome to the week 5, game 5 thread of the 2020 New Orleans Saints season... and once again we're on primetime on Monday night.
We're finally back on the good side of things after taking care of business in Detroit even while playing without six typical starters, and more importantly, the aerial portion of the Saints offense that fans have grown accustomed to over the last 14 seasons may have finally arrived as well.
But to take a 2-game win streak and the NFC South lead into the bye week, the Saints will have to work against a battle-tested Chargers team that possesses the 10th-best scoring defense coming into this weekend, all while again being without their All-Pro wide receiver.
Don't let the 1-3 start for LAC fool you, or the fact that they have a rookie starting at quarterback currently. The Chargers have been in every game they've played this season, with all three losses coming by 7 points or less. In fact, the Chargers had good leads against both the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs as well as Tom Brady & the Buccaneers before letting both games get away from them late. This is the Chargers' third straight game against a team from the NFC South, having lost to former Saints QB Teddy Bridgewater & the Carolina Panthers 21-16 prior to the Tampa Bay loss.
For his sake, Justin Herbert seems to be settling in as the starting QB for LAC. In the 38-31 loss at Tampa last week, he completed 80% of his passes and threw for three scores, getting the team out to a 24-7 lead, though that lead would obviously not hold as a turnover just before halftime turned the momentum in the Bucs favor.
The Saints defense will have to look for an opportunity though, as the Chargers have turned the ball over 7 times already through just four games this season, including an interception thrown by Herbert in each game he's played in. Turnover margin is always big in a game, and this NEEDS to favor the Saints tonight as LAC comes into tonight already -4 in give away/take away ratio while the Saints are +2 in that metric.
The last time these 2 teams played, October 2, 2016, in San Diego was Drew's first game back in his first NFL home stadium. The Saints were staring an 0-4 start to the 2016 season square in the face as they trailed the then-San Diego Chargers 34-21 in the 4th quarter with San Diego in possession of the ball. But a Melvin Gordon fumble turned into a Brees to Mike Thomas touchdown, and then a Travis Benjamin fumble turned into a John Kuhn touchdown to give the Saints the lead right at the two minute warning. A 4th & 22 hail mary lob by Phillip Rivers ended the third straight Chargers drive with a turnover as the Saints completed the comeback for a 35-34 win, sending the Saints into their 2016 bye week in week 5 feeling somewhat better at 1-3, momentum the Saints used to win 4 out of 5 to get back to 4-4, though 2016 eventually ended 7-9.
LET'S POWER DOWN THE CHARGERS AND HEAD INTO THE OFF WEEK ON TOP OF THE DIVISION AGAIN!!!!!

Holy Crap! Look at that injury report.
I want the Saints to Win
But we’re up against a rookie QB, so it won’t be easy.

Can’t wait. Appreciate the write up and I can’t wait to watch us make Herbert looking like a first ballot.

weirdly enough... I think this actually IS possible
let's say the Saints are kicking a PAT... it's blocked... somehow gets kicked all the way back to the other end zone... a Saint recovers it... runs out of the end zone... and then back in and gets tackled for a safety... that would be a 1 point safety

Well, that settles it... this will be how we get bounced from the playoffs this year, 28-27 (opponent yet to be determined)

Wow. Literally the picture you'd see next to the definition of "Punchable Face."

Report: Saints expect Jared Cook, Sheldon Rankins back in the lineup vs. Chargers... LINK
The New Orleans Saints will have some extra help when they host the Los Angeles Chargers at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Monday night. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that starting tight end Jared Cook and defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins will both be suiting up to play after being listed as questionable on the injury report.
Saturday’s report included a first-time mention of Rankins’ thumb injury, which caused him to practice on a limited basis to close out the week. Cook missed Week 4’s game with the Detroit Lions due to a groin issue. The Saints tight ends combined for just one catch (a 7-yard gain by Josh Hill) in his absence against a weak Lions defense, so getting Cook back versus a stronger Chargers unit should be helpful.
However, the Saints will not be playing alongside wide receiver Michael Thomas. Thomas was expected to return from his Week 1 ankle injury, but he’s been suspended for Week 5’s game after fighting with safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson during practice over the weekend. He had been officially questionable to play but was trending towards a return from injury.
Other Saints players who are questionable for Monday night with injuries: defensive end Marcus Davenport (elbow, toe), cornerback Marshon Lattimore (hamstring), and left guard Andrus Peat (ankle). Check back often for updates on their status.

Is it shocking to anyone else that we are currently 6th in defensive yds/game?

We all know that's misleading. Yards/game is deflated by giving up the most 1st downs by penalty in the league. We're near last in PPG allowed at 30.8.

Schefty tweeted that Chargers activated a DE and insinuated that might mean Joey won’t play. Granted his tweets says “Joey might play” but I’m pretty sure he meant “might NOT play”

What OP should do is have a blank first post so that it's easy to click "reply" on the in-game thread. Then for the second post, the OP could put all of this data into that one so we don't have to scroll through the long text wall 50 times per game.
Downvoted OP because it is far too long and will be a pain to scroll past when I want to post in the game thread.

it is an interesting call up in terms of Bosa's availability

Have you ever thought why you are the lone voice in the wilderness crying about the format of the in game thread?
Just take a break from posting here until you figure it out. I hate to see you suffer in order to post.

Is the game coming on any local channels since it’s ESPN? I know they used to do this back in the day.
