DAVIE, Fla. - Wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who led the NFL with 112 receptions in 2017, has received the non-exclusive franchise tag from the Miami Dolphins. The thinking, according to a source, is the Dolphins want to keep a player they've drafted and developed.

Salary projections for wide receivers with the 2018 franchise tag are in the $16 million range.

The Dolphins would work with the Landry to sign a multi-year deal, the source said, and added the $16 million one-year salary under the franchise tag would be similar to Landry's first-year salary cap hit on a multi-year deal.

Tuesday was the first day teams could the franchise or transition tags on players. NFL teams have until 4 p.m. on March 6 to put the franchise or transition tag on a player.

Honestly best for us. He doesnt go to a team we play, and now we dont have the option to overpay someone we dont really need.

They would have franchised Snead if they had had the chance.

Better question now is if you are Jarvis...do you bet on yourself?

Miami is no doubt trying to do a longterm deal vs carrying a 1 year/16 million fully guaranteed contract. However now you have all the leverage

If Jarvis refuses to sign a multiyear deal and puts up another solid outing he would be in for a slightly greater payday next year with 16 million already pocketed.

Since most of the deals have a majority of the guarantees upfront Jarvis would be double dipping this year and next year with massive pay days and then would be in position to max out his contract with his remaining playing years.

Basically Jarvis at 25 is more likely to pocket 16 million now plus another big pay day next year than Jarvis years from now coming back to the table with slightly to drastically diminished skills from aging.

Obviously if it was me and I was on a mediocre team that has been notorious for bad decisions like Signing Cutler, Extending Tannehill, and trading Ajayi for peanuts...I would be very inclined to make that team pay for trapping me in irrelevant team purgatory.

Gotta be crazy to make like 4 mill your whole career then be guaranteed 16 mill in a season just like that. Good for him.

I guess we should expect Snead to be getting his offer of about 17 mil per year now.

Have we franchised SJB yet?

Look at the players that were drafted right after him

2 58 New Orleans Saints Stanley Jean-Baptiste CB Nebraska Big Ten
2 59 Indianapolis Colts Jack Mewhort OT Ohio State Big Ten
2 60 Carolina Panthers Kony Ealy DE Missouri SEC
2 61 Jacksonville Jaguars Allen Robinson † WR Penn State Big Ten from San Francisco [R2 - 12]
2 62 New England Patriots Jimmy Garoppolo QB Eastern Illinois OVC
2 63 Miami Dolphins Jarvis Landry † WR LSU SEC from Denver via San Francisco

:wah:

Glad we have Ireland now and these shitty drafts are a thing of the past

If it wasn't for 2014, we likely don't have 2015-2017.

So even though it sucks, I'm OK with it.

This tag could mean they are trying to trade Landry. They only have 8 mill in cap space so they obviously can't afford the tag price. If a trade doesn't go through then the NFL would have to overturn the tag. Basically, it looks like they are trying to buy some time.

Low class move by the fins, he’s been one of their only bright spots, he deserves a long term deal... PAY THE MAN!

I definitely think they are looking to trade him. They do not want to let an asset walk for nothing. However, it would not be difficult to create the cap room to keep him on the tag if they want to.

Don't think it would have mattered anyway. He's a vacuum for sure, but he's not a game changer at the position on that team.

$16M is WAY too much for him, but they had to do what they had to do. Good for him, good for us.

Whose contracts would they cut or redo?
Ryan Tannehill 15.2 mil saved if cut
Jawuan James 9.3 saved
Mike Pouncey 7 mil saved
Cameron Wake 5 mil
Michael Thomas 4.5 mil

16 mill for a guy who ranked 114 out of 118 WR's, in yards per catch, is a way overpaying him.
