We were promised a rotation, and now it begins. Jameis Winston took the field at New Orleans Saints training camp with the first-team offense on the third day of practice, following Taysom Hill’s first two days in that role. Hill is now working with the second team during Saturday’s practice.

If the pattern holds, Winston will get the nod in the Saints’ next session on Monday — players are off on Sunday, and their first team practice in pads is scheduled for Tuesday. Hill got two days, so it makes sense for Winston to receive the next two days of work with the starters. Expect that rotation to hold as training camp continues.

It’s going to be fascinating to see how this all shakes out. The Saint are two weeks away from their first preseason game (a road trip to see the Baltimore Ravens on Aug. 14), with their remaining two exhibition matchups off in the distance; New Orleans will host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 23 and the Arizona Cardinals on Aug. 28

While the Winston-Hill competition has deservedly drawn attention, there’s another battle behind them between Trevor Siemian and rookie draft pick Ian Book. How the minutes are divided between the four passers is a yet-unsolved mystery. New Orleans typically rosters three quarterbacks, so either Siemian, the mulleted veteran, or Book, the fourth-round rookie, will be left out in the cold.

Honestly, I was hoping for a WR in the late 4th.

Jameis had a rough day. Was 3-7 in 1 on 1 drills and 1-4 in 11 on 11.

Not like we could’ve used another WR

QB room is Jameis, Trevor, and Ian. Taysom is the gadget player, who is going to step up this year and play a lot more TE and WR. He will have a few QB plays, but he will never be QB 1 this year unless Jameis is injured.

Edit: Let the downvotes pour, but yall know CSP is just trying to be "tricky" and act like Taysom will be QB 1, and in the long run, that only hurts Jameis getting reps in practice.

I wouldn’t be too sure about that. It’s not like Trevor Siemian is some great back up and CSP obviously likes Book. As long as he doesn’t tank in practice I could see Book being the 3rd QB.

The lengths some of you will go to convince yourselves that Taysom isn't in a legitimate competition for the starting job with Jameis fricking Winston is downright hilarious.

I just don't see it. CSP would never try to get cute and end up stifling the offense...

Nah, I just know that Taysom adds more value playing TE/WR, and special teams, than he does at QB. Plenty of others see that as well.

You didn't hear? Jameis is good now. Try not to remember that the year after he left, his team won the fricking super bowl. But we have him now so he's now good. All he needed was SP. Am I doing it right?

The only knock on JW has been his turnovers. Not his accuracy. Not his arm strength. Not his footwork. Taysom also has a turnover problem. Along with accuracy and footwork problems. It's not really that hard to see who's the better option at this point.

Well with all due respect, another knock on him is that he's pretty stupid. Like...not smart. That should also weigh highly in your judgment.

Objectively, what I've heard is that the guy is actually quite smart. He did seem to be very immature, but that might have come from him succeeding at every level without having to adjust (Heisman, national champ, #1 pick, starting in the NFL as a rookie etc).

Something that comes to mind is a Lane Kiffin comparison; I know we're talking player vs coach. But same concept- everything you want, but can't put it together because he doesn't take it serious. Being cut and riding the bench for a year might have done wonders for that.

If maturity is all that is needed, then Jameis is definitely still in the window physically.

This wont age well, lol. Payton tricked everyone last year by starting Taysom? Payton likes a cerebral qb that can act like a coach on the field. Unless Jameis has changed and studies the playbook, film and can process better, he will never start. So we will know soon enough.

I don't either. If CSP wants Hill primarily as a WR for depth purposes, he needs to practicing as a WR and not a QB. This is a legit QB battle. I would like to see extended play time in the preseason games for both QBs to really evaluate who the starter will be.
