Running back Mark Ingram’s first preference is to remain in New Orleans but will test the market if he doesn’t receive a reasonable offer from the Saints, a league source told FOX 8 sports. The Saints have expressed their desire to have Ingram back, though both sides have not engaged in contract discussions as of yet.

Ingram is a free agent coming off an interesting 2018 season. Ingram began the season with a four-game suspension which hampered his final statistics but also showed he’s not as easy to replace within the Saints offense. Overall, Ingram’s snaps and carries were down. He finished the year with 645 rushing yards and six touchdowns in 12 games.

He’s currently just 90 yards away from surpassing Deuce McAllister as the Saints' all-time leader in rushing yards. Ingram is also one of the most well-respected leaders inside the Saints' locker room.

Duh article of the young year, and I know we can't keep everyone, but him and Kamara are a great 1-2 punch, and locker room leaders can't be overvalued.

Says he will test the market if he doesn’t get a reasonable offer from the Saints. Not quite the same thing.

i feel like him and saints are setting up a "its not me, it was them" situation but hope they both truly want to keep eachother.

I really hope we find a way to keep him.

This is a big part of it. And I think he's been huge in Kamara's development, too. They really seem to feed off each other.

Told you guys. No way the Saints match what he gets on the market.

Edited OP, realized that statement didn't necessarily make sense.

I'm of the opinion that his productivity *in our offense* could easily be replaced by a cheaper option.

I think he would flourish in a scheme that fed him more.

I think we have bigger holes to fill and that money would be better spent elsewhere.

Ingram was sorely missed in the beginning of the season, but if he can't take a discount, adios.

i've said it before, the only way he stays is if he takes a deal like he did the last time

I’m willing to forgive Kareem Hunt and pay him a prove it deal instead of paying too much for Ingram...Hunt and Kamara on a 1-2 punch would be disgusting

Ingram is going to have to want to stay more than we want him to stay.

I've always liked Ingram and would prefer he stayed. He has been very loyal and worked very hard. He absolutely should test the FA market as this is probably his last chance to get paid. The truth is, his play was underwhelming this year. If the Saints can work out a reasonable deal with him, great. If not, I just can't see giving him a big contract given his age.

The nfl owes us. Hunt isn't the same as a super bowl, but it's a good start. Pave the PR road for us, Goodell

I don't think this is necessarily true. There could easily wind up being a big market for him, depending on what suspension he gets.

But just so I don't get accused of hijacking the thread, the original story sounds like typical pre-negotiation posturing to me.

It's easy to say Ingram is easily replaceable in our offense but I don't know that it's so straight forward. Replacing Ingram's established dynamic in the offense with a running back of his caliber could be difficult.

We've seen Ingram be able to carry the load and be an above average back in the NFL. We've also seen the dynamic of Ingram and Kamara work really well. They're different styles of running backs and bring different skills. It works well. I think to replicate a running back of Ingram's talent who's willing to split a ton of time with Kamara and not be a distraction isn't an easy thing to find.

You idiots bitch about Ingram fumbling too much, and you want Hill who fumbles once per 78 carries (Ingram is once every 88 carries). He went to LSU instead of Bama though so it’s forgivable.

Ingram is one of my favorite Saints ever, and I’ll be sad to see him leave, but I think we can get him on a team friendly deal as I don’t think his market will be that big.

Any way to load up his contract next year and have it be smaller the next few years? We have a lot of guys to sign next offseason.

They tried and failed for three preseason games and four regular season games. Now sure, the counter-argument is that they weren't spending big money on legit options because it was a four game rental, but that doesn't mean it will be easy just because they're willing to open the check book. Also, if you're willing to pay for a good player not knowing how he'll fit in with what we have, why not pay the good player that we already know fits?
