I still think we’ll compete for a playoff spot, I still think we’ll compete for the division.

I just don’t believe Marshon Lattimore can’t play anymore. I don’t believe Ken Crawley suddenly goes from serviceable to the worst CB in the league. I don’t believe Cam Jordan goes from all pro to nonexistent.

I’m not trying to spin anything good from today. It was bad. It was almost so bad that I don’t take it seriously.

They’ll play better, there’s too many dudes we’ve seen play at a very high level that they won’t level out, especially defensively.

Problem is when starters were in against Chargers 3rd preseason game same thing happened. Defense looked like swiss cheese.

I really hope you’re right but we’ve had bad years after good defensive years. The 2013 defense was top 4 in the NFL while our 2014 one broke some NFL records for how bad they were.

i'd be fully optimistic that this was just an outlier game

except

we have had this exact scenario happen to our D

year 1: D amazes everyone and does well w a new DC

offseason: payton tinkers and forces in some players

year 2: D sucks dick

They certainly could bounce back like last year when many left them for dead.
But you have to wonder why you’re seeing yet another poor season opener. It’s like half the team was sleepwalking out there.

No doubt. I don’t think any of those iterations of the Saints D has as much raw talent as this one. Coaching can certainly frick that up though.

Payton said something in postgame that was encouraging though- basically that type of game isn’t us and doesn’t suit us. That’s what we did when we were a .500 team.

They will get it together and make a little run after a bad start to the season. Just enough to get to 7-9. It is history repeating itself sgain. Just watch.

Worst looking opening game that I can remember. Defense was atrocious

Nah. Just basically saying we don’t want to go down this road again.

Also, from Lattimore: “We needed to get slapped in our face one good time to see that we’re not on the level we think we’re on.”

No doubt. Would have bet the house on the Saints today giving the points too.
Thought we were easy 12-4 to 14-2 so 11-5 to 13-3

Those new players were supposed to be upgrades.

Payton and Loomis and Ireland got the players, it’s up to Allen to put them in the right positions. That’s on Allen, not Payton. Robinson is an upgrade as is Davis. It was Allen’s dumbass self that put Davis at Will instead of Mike. Anzalone is better at Will and Davis is better at Mike. That’s on Allen.

The DL has no excuse. They’re all the same players aside from Davenport. They were abysmal

Dline and no pressure from the edge will make us another 8-8 team regardless of what the O does

Many people said regression was likely for the Saints defense.

What leads you to believe that these negative changes on defense are all Payton’s doing? Any evidence of that or are you just guessing?

I believe the high projections got to their head and they thought the bucs would just come in and lay down. I expect this to fully wake them up.
