In the 2020 draft I forgot we traded 2021's 3rd for Baun

quote:

Cleveland traded third- and seventh-round selections (74th and 244th) to New Orleans in exchange for a third-round selection (88th) and a 2021 third-round selection.[Trade 23]

Luckily a comp 3rd for Teddy and a 3rd for Terry Fontenot makes up the difference, especially with our traded 3rd pick being so low in the round.

Just studying draft selections since we will need to hit it out the park this draft for depth.

I’m not sure when we get Fontenot’s pick. I’m also not sure if both are the same year or back to back years.

If I’m not mistaken the Saints will receive a 3rd comp pick for teddy, another 3rd comp pick for fontenot this year, and another 3rd next year for fontenot. We will also get one for Aj Klein which will most likely be a 6th rounder.

Serious question: did Baun meet/exceed/live up to expectations this season?

I ask because I have no clue how to evaluate such a thing. I never see his name brought up on this board for better or worse, and I never heard announcers mention him either

He didn’t play too much.

He had 5 games with greater than 10% snaps played, and only 3 greater than 20%

For Year 1, for a 3rd pick, I would have to say no. It's not a knock on him, but just evaluating by where he was taken and not even taking into account what was given up for him. I would expect a 3rd rounder to be a fringe starter, but he was clearly a backup, to Alex Anzalone at that. Obviously still very young, here's to hoping he the switch flips for him and he lights it up

If the Saints drafted him to be a special teams player, then yes, he met expectations. Anything other than that, then no, didn’t meet expectations

We will also get 3rd’s next year for Hendrickson and Marcus Williams who will both likely sign with new teams in the offseason.

Certainly looks like he’s going down the Kikaha/Akiem Hicks path where they’re playing him in the wrong position. He played ON the edge in college and excelled in rushing the passer and disrupting plays behind the line, but we decided to try to make him a middle linebacker

Hard to gauge anything a rookie did this year with no preseason and limited off season activities. Still hope he brings some charge and explosiveness to this defense

Only 2 LBers get the majority of the snaps for us

Demario played 99% of the snaps

Kwon/Anzalone another 84% of the snaps

Cam 78%

Trey/Dav 88%

Granderson another 27%

Tough to find snaps on edge or at LB for a 3rd round positionless rook

ETA Baun played 7% of defensive snaps

I seem to think he will slide into the pre-2020 version of Trey Hendrickson meaning he would log a lot on passing down snaps in a pass rush position. He just seems to struggle when playing in space at the LB position.

So we swapped a ‘21 3rd for a ‘20 7th in order to move up 14 spots to grab Braun. That combined with the mid season trade for Kwon shows just how much Sean wanted to upgrade at LB after Davis. Was Braun banged up, not as good as they thought, or did Hendrickson’s emergence as an elite edge rusher change their original plan for him?

Is Anzolone a free agent? I think they’re ready to move off him unless he re-signs on the cheap for depth. I’ve been really perplexed by the lack of snaps for Robertson. Before Davis got here, he was our best LB for a couple of years. He fall off a cliff physically?

Like it’s been sad, I think judgement on Baun needs to be reserved until he can get a full offseason with the team.

Thankfully yes. Time to move on.

I agree, and I’m not judging him. I think it’s more likely he was either banged up or they saw him as an edge rusher, but they just couldn’t keep Hendrickson off the field. Even if he wasn’t as good this year as they hoped he’d be, that certainly doesn’t doom him to be a bust. We need him. Yeah, we’ll always need to hit on 1st and 2nd rounders, but with the cap he’ll we’re in, all these 3rd rounders coming up are gonna play a huge part in our being competitive. Between Braun and the 3-4 3rd rounders we’ve got the next couple years, if we can get a few starters and a couple more depth guys in that round, it will allow us to extend some of our stars like Ram and Lat.

Saints hate the draft... always trying to trade away many picks for as little a return as possible.

Baun didn't look great in the last game at outside backer.

He is going to take time.
Has the brain and body for it but isn't use to playing off the ball linebacker
