Hometown discount on Brees...
Old boy has a reported net worth of nearly 100 million. As good as Brees has been for New Orleans the city has certainly reciprocated the love. It’s time for him to step up and sign at a discount for the team that gave him a second chance and would probably elect him governor tomorrow. Other quarterbacks have done it for the better of the team why can’t he do the same. I mean it’s not like he’s going to be struggling to balance the checkbook if we sign him for 20 million instead of 30. We have some serious positional needs that if filled would only make him look better and improve his chances on winning another Super Bowl. Taking the cash grab for the max contract he can get just makes him look like an a-hole in my opinion.

Players have short careers and need to make as much money as they can when they can. Who are you to tell him enough money is enough?

He’s not beholden to us.

re: Hometown discount on Brees...
if he was early in his career I completely agree. His relationship with the city of New Orleans goes far beyond that of a max contract. He’s raised his family here… and calls New Orleans home. His agent and his financial advisor might tell him one thing but his heart and his conscience should tell him another. End of the day he’s really not giving up that much by giving the Saints a hometown discount for his services. He’s got generational wealth that could last in perpetuity if managed properly.

It doesn't matter.

While it would be nice if he took slightly below value, he doesn't need to.

Company A tells you they want you to take a pay cut.

Company B tells you that they want to give you a significant raise.

Who are you working for? I'm sure there will be many honest answers here.

Out of almost 2,000 players in the nfl how many have offered up a "hometown discount" besides Mr Brady?

This isn’t his “hometown”. And Brees likes records and money. He isn’t giving up money to win. He’s not going to push the envelope, but it will be the going rate for a franchise QB which is in the upper 20s to low 30s/ year.

The first thing they tell you when you enter the NFL is "this is a business". I don't expect him to take a hometown discount. If I were in his shoes I'd ask for as much as I can get

Can't he just play for league minimum?

And have Gayle hire him to do a Dixie Beer commercial for $25m?

As a fan, I feel like he should offer a discount.

As a human, I'd have a hard time just turning down millions of dollars out of the goodness of my heart.

It's sooooo easy to tell someone else what they should do with their money.

People like to hide behind the "he makes millions" but that's nonsense. You don't tell someone else what to do with their money especially if you wouldn't be willing to do the same with your money/job.

How many of you are willing to take 50% less than market valule for the sake of your company?

All we ever here is all that the team has done for him so he should take a discount.

What about what he has done for the team, shouldn't the team pay him fair value going forward?

It is true that hardly any of the 2000 players in the NFL would ever consider giving a hometown discount but then again… how many have six Super Bowl rings?

I'm guessing it has nothing to do with 6 SB rings and everything to do with the fact that his wife is I assume richer than any of the other 2000 players' wives.

That's probably no coincidence.

re: Hometown discount on Brees...
I would say that it has everything to do with six Super Bowl rings. Regardless of his safety net he did take a discount on his contract which allowed the patriots to get better players.

While their (him and Mrs QB) combined net worth is estimated at nearly 600,000,000 he stands alone at approximately 175 million.

He will when he gives New Orleans a fair price instead of shooting for a top 5 salary.

re: Hometown discount on Brees...
Anyone who thinks Brees considers New Orleans his hometown is dumb. His wife and kids live here during the season only because they have to. The minute he retires, he sells his house and his wife and kids never come back to New Orleans.

The only discount that Brees has consistently given us is that he doesn't go to free agency and look for other offers.

That makes sense if you're a player that hasn't made it yet. Brees is one of the very few that has made life changing money for himself and his kids. He could have walked away from football at any time in the last 5 years and still be set for life and a lock for the Hall of Fame.

The Saints have finite resources to put a roster together, one where he needs maybe a little more help than in the past due to physical limitations. If he desperately wants another championship with the Saints then he has to realize he's hurting any chance of that happening if he demands max value.

Truth.

I like Drew Brees and I consider him a good guy and the Saints are beyond lucky they have him but I'm not under the delusion that he considers Louisiana his home or he really cares all that much about winning a second super bowl.

The NFL at its core is still a business and its employees act accordingly and Drew is every bit one of those employees that make business decisions for themselves.

His biggest priority is getting as much money as he can for his family. If he happens to win a second second super bowl doing that, then great, if not, oh well, he still gets paid and life goes on.

Him yucking it up with Vikings players after the playoff game is solid evidence of that.
