Guice a possibility in the 1st?

Interesting article discussing the possibility. I'm a huge Ingram fan and hope he signs an extension. I personally hope this doesn't happen but what if on draft night the Saints are on the clock and Guice is by for the best player on their board. What if the Saints have him rated as one of the Top 15 players in this draft? Do you think they would pull the trigger? Would you?

Ingram is entering the last year of his contract with the Saints. He's aware of the situation. He knows the business side of football can turn on anyone at any time. What if LSU's Derrius Guice is above and beyond the best player on the Saints' board at No. 27 overall? Should the Saints take Guice? It's not a totally absurd question. It might not be a popular question, but it's legitimate. A lack of a contract extension for Ingram opens the door for the conversation.

The two-time Pro Bowler undoubtedly deserves a contract renewal. He's coming off two of his best seasons in the NFL. Ingram doesn't turn 29 until December and doesn't carry the same wear and tear of the NFL as many runners would at the same age.

Some scouts think Guice is a top 10 player.
I'd rather not take a RB in the 1st, but if our FO has Guice ranked that high & he falls to 27...it wouldn't surprise me. That would basically tell us all we need to know about their future plans for Ingram. There would be no reason to draft him if they plan on extending or re-signing Ingram for 2019.

Sounds good. We definitely have the need after apparently trading Ingram for the Browns #4 and #33 OA.

Not sure if it would be worth alienating Ingram and Kamara

ole lazy larry
deep deep deep RB draft. Going to be great value later in the draft. Find guys that fit your system. They don't necessarily have to be all world Derrius Guice.

Actually it’s pretty absurd and not legitimate at all.

Agreed. Personally, I'd like to draft a RB somewhere in rounds 4-6. Maybe the 3rd if we acquire additional mid round picks. Regardless of where we draft a RB...we 100% need 1 in this draft, b/c we probably gave up on F.A. RB's after Benny Cunningham didn't sign here.
#3 RB is definitely one of the few draft musts...as of right now. OG/OC & backup Safety are a couple of others. Good news is that #3 RB & backup Safety can be had later in the draft. OG/OC can be had in the mid rounds(3rd-4th), but 1st/2nd round would be my preference.

I wouldn't be surprised if Guice doesn't get drafted in the first round.

I love when a writer has to qualify a statement with “its not TOTALLY crazy!” Which usually means it’s some dumb madden shite

Saints= a team with 2 Pro Bowl RBs, whose styles compliment each other, who obviously like each other, who were the most stable position on the offense (outside QB, but then Brees is getting old so finding a new QB makes sense).
Also an organization that really seems to look hard to see if there's someone NOT from LSU they can draft (just saying, the opportunities have been there).
Obviously, they will take Guice.

If Guice is drafted in the first by the Saints I would melt harder than if we gave up our entire 2018 Draft and first two picks next year to move up for a QB

It would be less crazy if running backs had a steep learning curve, but it's one of the easiest positions to transition to for rookies. Getting a #3 in the later rounds is fine, but don't draft a #1b guy yet if you plan to let Ingram walk next offseason. Wait until next draft to do it.

I don't see it happening, but I understand the logic if they feel Guice is one of the 10 best players in the entire draft. What's worse ? Settling for a guy you have ranked 50th on your overall board just because he fills a position of greater need? Or, passing on a guy you feel certain will be an outstanding player just because you don't absolutely "need" him at that time?
The Saints probably didn't "need" a RB last year with Ingram coming off of a good year and having just signed Peterson. But Payton thought Kamara was an outstanding player and took him over guys that may have filled bigger "needs"
In 2016 the Saints probably didn't absolutely "need" a WR at the 47th pick. In 2015 Brees had led the NFL again in passing and the Saints were #1 in 3rd down %. However, the defense was again among the worst in football and desperate for a talent infusion. The Saints "needed" defensive help badly, but they took Mike Thomas because they thought he was just too good of a player. They were right.
If they have Guice and another player who fills a bigger need comparably rated...take the other player. If they have Guice rated significantly higher than anyone else available at that time...take Guice

I concur. Most RB's catch on right away to the NFL game...relative to other positions.
Only way I could accept it is if the FO had him rated as a top 10-15 player. The FO has earned my trust after the last 2 off-seasons.

Would rather reach for an edge than draft guice.
The potential of any edge rusher would likely contribute more than Guice ever would as long as we have this duo.

The saints absolutely needed a receiving back to really run our offense.

Here's another RB article from Nola.com LINK
Draft priority for Saints: Low
What the Saints might do in the draft: Because the Saints have Ingram and Kamara, there’s certainly no pressing need to draft a running back.
However, with how frequently players suffer injuries in the NFL, the Saints’ decision to draft a running back — or not — likely has more to do with the depth behind Ingram and Kamara.
The other running backs on the roster — Edmunds and Williams — are unproven on offense. Edmunds looked like a special teams star at times in his rookie season in 2017, but Williams was never active last season after joining the Saints, though he had 11 games of experience with the Bills in 2016.
If the Saints do pick a running back, it will likely be someone who can contribute on special teams, but it’s possible to find undrafted players that can do that, like Edmunds. In fact, the Saints have found undrafted running backs who contribute a lot on offense, including Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory.
The wild card here is that Ingram is entering the final year of his contract. Obviously, it would seem the Saints should want to keep Ingram and see if he and Kamara can be an effective tandem for years to come, particularly if the offense starts to run the ball even more after Drew Brees eventually retires.
Still, considering another standout season by Ingram could make him expensive in 2019 and beyond, there could be a desire to draft a running back now who can sit and wait for a year.
With the six picks in the fourth through seventh rounds, it'll be hard to find immediate contributors, so there's a chance the Saints will grab a running back they like, even if it's not a high priority.
Potential Day 1 (first round) selections
Saquon Barkley, Penn State
Derrius Guice, LSU
Ronald Jones, USC
Potential Day 2 (rounds 2-3) selections
Nick Chubb, Georgia
Sony Michel, Georiga
Royce Freeman, Oregon
Kerryon Johnson, Auburn
Ito Smith, Southern Miss
Mark Walton, Miami
Rashaad Penny, San Diego State
John Kelly, Tennessee
Potential Day 3 (rounds 4-7) selections
Kalen Ballage, Arizona State
Mark Walton, Miami
Nyheim Hines, N.C. State
Darrel Williams, LSU
Akrum Wadley, Iowa
Bo Scarbrough, Alabama
Jordan Wilkins, Ole Miss
Chase Edmonds, Fordham
Dimitri Flowers, Oklahoma
Roc Thomas, Jacksonville State
Justin Jackson, Northwestern
Justin Crawford, West Virginia
Phillip Lindsay, Colorado

Love him, but no way. Ingram and Kamara are a great duo we need to keep long term.
However, we do need a bruiser to fill the Mike Bell/Hightower/Ivory closer role.
Enter Darrel Williams.
