What ultimately made the difference from repeated 7-9 records in 2014-2016 to being one of the top teams in the NFC in 2017 (and hopefully 2018)? Was it better drafting? Staying healthy? Change in defensive scheme? A combination of factors?

Drafting, not thinking we’re perennially one or two pieces away, better play along both lines , and running the fricking ball.

IMO, the 2017 draft changed everything, especially for vastly improving the defensive backfield.

This was the undoing for those years exacerbated by bountygate loss of draft picks. The franchise has been way more disciplined in their draft approach since 2016

Fresh blood on defensive coaching staff, drafting better and not signing jackasses like junior and browner

Pretty obvious to me. Payton cleaned house on the defensive at ST coaching staffs. Both have improved drastically. Coaches get stale and lazy when they get comfortable like the old regime was.

Combine the new coaching staff with Ireland and we have something cooking.

The Saints went into full rebuild mode. They virtually gutted the roster, purging players that did not fit the mold of the team that Payton wanted. We let go of plenty of cancers and a few talented guys in search of players that matched what Payton wanted.

The additions are talented, but just as important, their attitude reflects that of what Payton looked for in a team.

Honestly the o-line and finally solid CBs were the difference. We hadn't had either sine 2013 or earlier.

We hit the draft out of the park last year and that may end up being historic. Hardly no team gets that many hits in one draft.

The saints didn’t really stay healthy last year. If they had we all may have been cheering on a super bowl win.

We had to go through the purge of salary cap purgatory, shed pricey veteran contracts, and get our shite together on the defensive coaching staff. Those years marked the end of that era. The draft last year added 5 high quality starters, which kick started them into success a year or two sooner.
