Finally reinvesting in the O-line has done wonders

Everyone knows we had one of if not the best lines in the league from 09-11. Since then we let player after player walk trying to fix it with bandaids. Two first round picks, a 3rd, a trade, and a big contract for Wafford later, it's finally back.

Back in 2013 before the draft I was calling for us to do this exact thing. We had one of the best (if not the best) lines in the league for a good stretch, but then we let them get old and let guys leaves (Faine, Nicks, and then Goodwin leaving and Evans and Strief getting old).
We were trying to get buy with backups/low end starters at LT and C. I was pounding the table that year for a high round LT. We lucked into Armstead in the third that year. Then we go out and get Unger and draft Peat, and later sign Warford and draft Ramcyzk.
And we shouldn't stop investing. I really want to retain Kelemete if he doesn't get more than a $5 mil a year deal elsewhere. We need to look at replacing Unger soon (next 2-3 drafts and let him sit behind Unger until ready). We need tackle or guard depth.
This was always the road back and I'm glad to see we finally started taking it.

I'd love to keep Kelemete but I don't see him staying if he gets a starter salary.
I think we're a year or two from having to find a replacement for Unger. Everyone else is younger than what, 26?

IMO, we should draft BPA in the first round, and best lineman, offensive or defensive, in the second, every year.
If they both happen to be linemen, so much the better.

I'm not going to pretend to study the OL on an individual basis, but today we absolutely killed it on runs up the gut. Base salary is under $5m/yr on average for the next two seasons. I'd be cool with using our 3rd on an interior OL if we can't keep Kelemete, but Unger feels like he's playing better than his contract.

When I say replace Unger soon I mean look at drafting his replacement in one of the next 2-3 drafts and letting him learn under him.
Unger easily has 2 year left after this, but we also shouldn't wait until it's too late like we did with the line before and be stuck with nothing.
I should have qualified that soon, because in the NFL soon can mean next week. I definitely meant 2-3 years after this year.

We have Unger for this year & most likely next year. He's under contract for 2019 (the last year of his contract), but he has a 8.7mil cap hit & only has a 1.75mil dead money hit.
Hopefully he keeps up his play & plays out his contract with us, but if he does start to go downhill...replacing him won't be a big deal in 2019.
Assuming we lose Kelemete in 2018, I think it's highly likely we bring in at least 1 OG or 1 OC (maybe even 1 of each). The only possible returning backups would be LeRibeus (UFA) & Cameron Tom.

When Armstead is playing, that also means Peat is allowed to play at his strengths.

You cannot help but be impressed with the job Ryan Ramczyk has done as a rookie as well. This line could be solidified for the next 5 years.

I'm down with it but only if a legit C is there at one of our picks and is better or equal to other guys on the board.
That's why I'm giving it the next 2-3 drafts to find one because you can't always do it in one.

Fixing the OL is Fundamental Football 101

Exactly, but most people wanted to draft 4th and 5th round guys just because "we did it before". You can't rely on getting that lucky that often.
Hell we lucked out enough with Armstead in the 3rd, but trading for Unger and drafting two more guys in the first and signing Warford is the type of commitment that was needed.
And now it's paying off. But just because we are good now doesn't mean we should slack off. I think all the injuries this year also has shown depth is very important.

Yep. I wouldn't be surprised if we went O-Line in the 1st round...assuming it's BPA. There are a few other positions that can be included in our BPA targets, but OL is definitely one of them.
I'll be happy as long as we hit on the pick, personally. Depending on what we do in free agency...we might not even have any blatant holes at starter positions to fill. That's a great problem to have, & hasn't been the case in the recent past.

Every offensive lineman we have starting outside of Armstead is of elite assets. Armstead was a 3rd rounder. Unger was in key piece in a blockbuster trade, Peat and Ramzyck were 1st rounders and Wafford was a high priced free agent. We needed to do it and patience has paid off.

Peat has been a beast this year.
only seems like yesterday when he was a whipping boy on this board.

Someone said the Peat pick was a failure because we drafted him to take over at RT for Strief but couldn't so we had to move him to guard, and despite being a very good guard because he wasn't playing RT it was still a bad pick (also because you "don't draft guards that high", which is also fricking stupid logic).
I will never understand some people's logic here. Peat was pretty close to a homerun pick. It's at least a triple to this point.
