All he said was it was a gut call. No other reasoning than saying he felt more confident in the kick than he did with ball security.

He just trusts Will Lutz to end the game.

I thought they might center it on first down then kick. That would leave you with 3 downs in case of a bad snap Vs kicking it on 4th down.

I really do think it's this simple. Lutz has 100% earned CSP's trust. Lutz has only missed 1 FG all year, & he hit the upright when he did.

CSP was convinced we had the game won when he sent the FG unit onto the field.

A loss instead of a tie could easily mean the difference between making and not making the playoffs. If you ask your team to bust arse all offseason and during the season, you need to do your due diligence as a coach and give them their best chance.

I was okay kicking it there. % were in your favor for Lutz and Bears offense was kinda falling apart. But the biggest thing was on that series, there were two near interceptions, Kamara bobbled a catch a few plays earlier and a play or two earlier he lost the ball after being tackled.

The team was tired and getting kinda sloppy. Take the win and go home.

I don't mind it, but I would have at least centered the ball and possibly knelt it twice.

Sean doesn't play for a tie. He was thinking that if we were to miss the FG there would still be a little time left to stop the bears and get one last shot at getting in FG range for the win

In my opinion its a different scenario than attempting a game winning field goal at the end of regulation knowing you still have overtime if he misses. In that case yes you run off all the time. But in this case you're playing to win not tie. So if theres enough time left that you could potentially get the ball back again then you kick it and save the time in case of a miss to get it back again.

Theres was about 1:10 left. Thats definitely enough time to get the ball back had he missed. The bears would obviously have been passing every down so if they throw 3 incompletions that isn't going to use much time at all and you get it back for one last shot. Now had there only been about 30 seconds or less then I agree run the clock out cause thats not enough time to get it back anyway at that point.

Payton showed alot of confidence in Lutz, especially considering the miss earlier in the game. As finicky as a kickers mindset can be receiving that belief from the head coach could very well pay dividends down the line. If Lutz is confident and has his mind right he is absolutely as good as you will find in the league today.
