Extremely underrated.

He had a construction company on the Northshore, I think.

Met him a few times. Definitely a Saints all-time great.

I remember Derland from my childhood days of watching Saints games. I recall seeing him at the 2018 Saints-Falcons Thanksgiving game in the Dome. He was being honored for his Saints HOF induction. They gave him a pre-game recognition directly in front of our section of the Plaza. Saints legend.

One of the few bright spots during those dismal years.

RIP Derland

When I met him he was working over here at Fort Knox storage in Mandeville. When I would go into the office to pay my bill would always talk Saints and LSU with him. Talked about his days at Oklahoma and the Saints and some off the field stuff too. Seemed like a good guy. But like some in that generation, don't want to go to the doctor when stuff happens and that is what may have been his downfall.

Had an uncle that had high blood pressure and refused to go to the doctor. He passed out at Sears in Slidell and then died. If he were on medication he may still be alive. Sad.
