Surprised this isn't a topic already... CSP was on WWL radio last night where he discussed a number of issues, including coming down with COVID-19, which he says he noticed symptoms about 10 days ago, but that's not the point of this thread

quote:

Jeff Duncan @JeffDuncan_
Sean Payton said Taysom Hill is going to be the Saints’ No. 2 QB going into the 2020 season. Payton: “He’s earned that opportunity.”

quote:

stan verrett @stanverrett
Let’s see how this affects his role in the offense outside of QB. Unless they have a QB3 they trust and can still run the Taysom packages.

quote:

Jeff Duncan @JeffDuncan_
Stan, he said they would add another QB to be active on game days, that way Taysom can continue in his multi-faceted role while Brees is No. 1.

quote:

Larry Holder @LarryHolder
Plus this likely opens the door for the Saints to add a young QB, maybe the draft.

Here's the full transcript of what Sean Payton said on WWL radio tonight about the Saints' backup QB situation:

With all the stuff said about the QB situation... my immediate take is that his statements should immediately take the Saints out of the FA QB market, esp. 1 of those "big name QBs trying to rebuild their career ala Teddy" like Jameis or Cam

that's the problem. #2 means scaled down gadget play. I would think they would also pull him from special teams.

But it doesn't
I think he will run the same amount of plays as last year, if not more.

when Brees was out they scaled back his touches. Maybe if they find a 3 they can trust they will not do that.

No it doesn’t. It just means he becomes the QB if brees goes down. They will have someone worthy of a backup role at the 3 slot.

Also, if Brees goes down again in anyway you gotta think that’s the the point where he just rides off into retirement.

Because we only had 2 QBs at that time (Hill and Teddy). Couldn't risk him getting hurt and then Teddy getting hurt.

Payton said we'll get a 3rd, and as long as we have 2 healthy QBs + Hill he will get his plays in.

We were never in that market to begin with. We were never signing another big name QB (unless they come super cheap like we originally got Teddy for).

I said that b/c people have been trying to link us to Jameis Winston since the day it became obvious he was out at TB for TB12

If Anthony Gordon is still available in the 6th Round I’d say go for it

Minshew did well coming from Leach’s system at Wazzou and Gordon threw 5600 yds with 48 TDs last year. Def worth a late flier

Drafting Jordan Love would be cool with me.

Well, would not be surprised to see him get 30% or more of the snaps to keep Brees healthy. A quasi two-QB system he certainly won’t be playing special teams. Doubt Herbert slips to 24, but Love could be there; pretty good prospect that could really develop under Brees tutelage.

Sean Payton: Taysom Hill sees himself as a starting QB, and we do too

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 31, 2020, 9:46 AM EDT NBCsports

quote:

Sean Payton does not believe in the old adage that if you have two quarterbacks you have none.

quote:

The Saints re-signed Drew Brees and placed a first-round tender on Taysom Hill, and Payton said on ESPN that the reason the Saints put a first-round tender on Hill is that they think he’s a starting quarterback — just not actually the starter until Brees retires.

quote:

“First and foremost, we still view him as a quarterback. We spent a lot of time this offseason discussing our vision for him this season at quarterback,” Payton said of Hill.

quote:

But Payton said Hill is too good an athlete to spend game days on the sideline holding a clipboard.

quote:

“He’s a tremendous blocker. I don’t think people realize how fast he is — he’s one of the two or three fastest guys on our team,” Payton said. “I think Taysom sees himself as being a starting quarterback in this league, and we do too.”

quote:

Hill will get plenty of reps at quarterback with the first-string offense because the Saints believe the 41-year-old Brees will benefit from time off in practice. Eventually, that practice time will serve Hill well, as the Saints believe Hill can be the heir apparent to Brees.

Whatever "3rd" QB they sign will tell you Payton's confidence in Taysom

They would of signed someone worth a damn if they didn't believe in taysom as at least a backup
Taysom is going to play his normal allotment of snaps and also will be qb 2
Why is that so hard to understand

not really. its necessary to have a competent backup level guy the way they use Taysom on an every down type basis. Payton himself said so.

What part of my post suggested he wasn’t at least a backup? He’s at least the QB3. No one ever said he wasn’t a backup

Not having another guy in March doesn’t mean anything. The season is a long time away
