If he were still alive, Renowned Psychologist and one of the founding fathers of cognitive behavioral therapy, founding father of Rational Emotive Therapy, Dr. Albert Ellis might suggest the following to cope with this Saints loss, especially if you label it as catastrophic

If your self talk is “The Saints suck”, ask yourself where is the evidence?. There is no evidence that the Saints suck this year. Is there evidence of the falseness of this belief that the Saints suck? Of course there is

Change the self-talk of “This is an awful awful loss” to something like “Sure, the loss was frustrating, even very frustrating. Crap happens”. Remind yourself that there is no reason why things must be the way you want them to be no matter how bad things appear now. Unfortunate events happen in this world, that’s just the way it is.

“The Saints should have won this game” . He would say stay away from the “shoulds”, as would Jim Mora. . Remind yourself that no team can be outstanding in every game, much less every play. Certainly no team will win the vast majority of playoff games, except maybe for the patriots.

When things are not to your liking, and you can’t change them you can tell yourself “I wish they were different dammit. But it’s not the end of the world and it won’t kill me or really even hurt me even if I have to put up with this the entire off-season “

Finally, he would argue that you have a choice to wallow in your misery if you want. He would also Say you have a choice to not feel nearly as bad. Your choice.

You could have talked about CBT with Aaron Beck, but you went with Ellis.

All right, then.

Damn right. And if you’ve ever heard him talk, he shoots straight from the hip. In fact he would say in a heartbeat that the line of self-talk of many on this board is “bullshite”.

If By therapeutic, you mean touchy-feely, he is absolutely not. He would be the first to say so. But if By therapeutic you mean affecting positive changes in emotions, his therapy is as effective as Beck’s. But individually, if Beck’s approach is more helpful then by all means a person should use that one. I just think Ellis would jive better with the people who post here.

I'm disappointed but not that upset. We won the division, improved by four games, advanced in the postseason, and have a bright future.

I overstated a bit, but I think he's a bit overly confrontational.

There's a reason why CBT is more popular, right?

Not to say I'm a CBT guy.
I'm more third wave.
