What would you rather:

Scenario 1: Jameis plays above average and we go 11-6 and lose in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Off-season has us with high hopes that Jameis can take the next jump.

Scenario 2: Jameis plays poorly, we go 5-12, and draft in the top 8 with a potential to trade up or land a franchise QB.

Scenario 3: ?

Why would fans want the team to lose?

Payton is a winner...you do whatever you can to keep your program winning. Hoping to bottom out for a top pick is what the Pelicans do, and how has that been working out the last 10 years?

Scenario 1 is something you can build on. Scenario 2 has just as much of a chance of being a revolving door of failed picks as it does of leading to a super bowl

Agree with this. If you are a playoff team (even with Winston), you can make strategic upgrades to try to get to the next level. If you are felling into the top 5/10 of the draft, you have more problems than just a QB and there are no guarantees that you can find the next guy even in the draft.

You know what, I am going to be positive about this:

maybe Wnston can get us over that playoff hump.

The last 2 years, Brees has not been 100%. In the playoffs , Tampa managed to stacked the box against Kamara and double Thomas, because they were not scared of the long ball. They took advantage of turnovers from both Cook and Brees.

If Winston can control the interceptions, he can open up a defense. If the throw is not there, he can scramble for more yards. Something Brees wouldn't do.

Not trying to run down Brees, but maybe a Winston with his new eyes, a year in the system, and Payton calling plays that work to Winston's strength could be a good thing.

Who would choose option 2? If those are the two options?

I have never been in Winston fan. That being said, a true Saints fan would be crazy to root against him and not wish for him to be lights out and the answer at quarterback. With the exception of the 30 INT season, the guy had nice numbers and SP might be the coach to position him for that next level. . Scenario number 1 without a doubt.

Jameis has a record breaking season... wins MVP... bring THE Saints our second Super Bowl... takes less than market value to stay with the Saints

Sports psychology has taught me that more times than not, when a team adopts or becomes ok with a losing mindset, they stay that way. I’d rather compete til the end and build a foundation of winners that way. This ‘tanking’ bullshite hasn’t completely worked out for any one team yet. Can you think of an example of it working out long term? Any sport?

This. Before our fan base who is all (give me muh wins) jumps down my throat, I think the scenarios are flawed. It entirely depends on how Jameis plays in either scenario. I think the worst thing for this franchise right now and for the roster we have built is to have an average QB waste the primes of some of our franchise's best players. I don't WANT Jameis to be bad but if given an option, I'd rather suck if that meant we could get a game-changer in the draft. I'd rather gamble our franchise on that rather than rolling with average QB play for 5-6 years. We're not going to become a losing franchise if we have a 7-9 or 6-10 season one year. Would most of you not be willing to suck one year and get the GUY rather than rolling with someone average and having 10-6, 9-7 type seasons where we win but aren't in true contention for the Lombardi? That's more of a loser mentality than anything.

I actually think

quote:

is worse depending on how Jameis looks. If he throws 34 Tds and 7 picks, then of course I'd rather roll with him but if he has a Derek Carr or Jimmy G type season and we get that far in the playoffs because of the roster and Payton, then of course that's not what we want. If we made it to the second round of the playoffs and Jameis had a statline like 20 TDs and 12 INts, then I think you would have fans ready to move on. I would much rather him suck than be average, then at least our coaches know that they have to move and get someone else instead of sticking with him the way Gruden has stuck with Carr or the way the 49ers stuck with Jimmy G. The worst thing Jameis can do for us is look average where some games he looks awesome and others he looks horrible. Best case is he's good the whole year or bad the whole year.

I think the Penguins did it for Crosby. Could be mis-remembering it, I wasn't an avid hockey fan back then but your point stands.
