re: Can Meachem step up?

Meachem could replace Colston about as well as Chase Daniel could replace Drew Brees.
Even Graham with his mad skills, could not replace what Colston does in this offense as a possession receiver. He might get some of his touches, but doesn't have the concentration to be reliable to extend drives (way too many drops).
Face it, we need Colston in this offense. Loomis will earn his keep if he can retain our big three, Brees, Nicks, and Colston.

Let's face it, if Colston does leave we will never find another receiver to replace what he does and how he does it
which is precisely why I keep screaming for him to be be resigned. I truly feel he is insanely underrated with the "Brees can make anyone look great" chatter that goes on. While Brees can greatly assist a WRs production, I still believe that its Colston's production/toughness/ability to make DBs, LBs, and Safeties account for the ball coming to him in a variety of different ways that really helps to open up things for Graham(elite player) and our other basically pretty average wide receivers.
Also why I maintain that we can more easily replace more of Nicks production than we can with Colston. Sure we can tinker the offense and have somebody catch a lot of balls and have decent numbers...but will those numbers actually translate to 1st downs, touchdowns, and meaningful plays or will the be a bunch of stats like in 08 (the last time Colston wasn't really in our lineup for a prolonged period of time).

See, you have to put a value on the difference of lets say Meachem's full time production to Colston's production. Whatever that difference is, is it worth the overall price tag it would require when you look at our entire team as a pizza pie and where the pepperoni's start landing.

I feel like this thread has the potential to be "Anyone surprised at how Devery has come around" version 2.0. Good luck.

Past three seasons:
Colston: 24 TD's
Meachem: 20 TD's
Colston: 24 TD's
Meachem: 20 TD's

Would be nice to see a comparison of how many third down conversions Colston and Meachem had.
Brees didn't have the best third down efficiency rate by throwing to Meach.

74 of Graham's 99 receptions were first downs. That was the 2nd most in the league last year and he only had 5 drops.(thats 5 drops out of 104 targets!) Graham moves the ball at will and is clearly one of the leagues best possession weapons.
*Colston had 55 first downs out of 80 receptions

@StAug - what Colston is able to do is very rare but replacing the best O-lineman in the league isn't gonna be easy.

The Saints had the #1 scoring offense, #1 total offense, and the #1 passing offense in 2008. It was the bad defense(24th) and bad run game(28th) that was the downfall. The passing game was as potent as ever.
I'm with you on how important Colston is and covet his playing style and I want him to be a saint forever. but I refuse to believe that this offense can't adjust and find a way to fill his production another way.

After putting thought into it, I think Meachem would replace Colston just fine. It may not be 100% equal but won't be anything devastating. I think Meachem actually has the potential to put up numbers surpassed that of Colston if he stays on the field as well. Meachem gots a nack for the big plays and run after the catch.

I will never trust Meachem like I do Colston and am not expecting him to make the type of plays he does. but Meach is a big physical receiver with his own skill set and I think he is capable of playing a bigger role.

Meachem has quietly become pretty solid and has earned some trust with me. Colston is often clutch but he's been known for some drops and costly mistakes as well. We ain't talking about mother theresa here...

Hopefully he is. I would love to see him step it up. I'd still like to draft or sign a big 6ft4 plus possession guy though.

yes it is. kindof. if we can find a big arse receiver with sure hands that doesnt drop balls and can go up into coverage in the middle of the field and pull down the rock then survive a pop by a saftey, then i dont give a shite if he can run after the catch. We have other receivers for that.

Meachem has been doing this IMO. I think a vote of confidence by the coaching staff will bring this kid even further.

I understand your need to want to replace Colstons roll(as do I) but if we are simply talking possession's and moving the chains then I think we will be just as good when our other receivers step up.

I'm not saying he cant develop into it. And hes shown some flashes of greatness. Coaching and confidence and leadership from Brees will certainly go a long way. But i also have memories of him dropping passes. Its very hard to find memories of Colston dropping passes (before any of you sarcastic jackasses find one, i know he isnt perfect). I'm not saying Meach cant step up, just that i like the big receiver (not TE) target for Brees.

You do understand we have the most accurate quarterback in the game. Drew could throw it to field mice if needed to.

yeah i nunderstand that. thats why i want the tallest guys for him to throw to. If we just put a bunch of 7 ft tall guys who can catch out there they weouldnt need to run. He could just throw 10 yrd passes all the way up the field.
