Brees on putting the team first instead of his banking account
Posted by CajunsTigersSaints on 3/13/18 at 9:43 am644
quote:
Talked more with Saints QB Drew Brees about his new deal: “There was no doubt in our minds, I think both myself and the Saints, that we were gonna get a deal done. It was just a matter of what was the most fair deal for me and for the team to put us in the best position to succeed in the near future.” Brees said he would be “lying” if he didn’t admit it’s hard to decide between taking max value and keep raising the bar for other players (especially as a former NFLPA leader). “But for me this was about putting our team in the best position to go win a championship in the next few years.” And he practically apologized to agent Tom Condon for not allowing him to max out his value – which certainly would have been more on the open market.

How can anyone dislike what Drew said?

i'm sure the mouth breathing troglodytes will say it - same brainless morons that say Ingram is horrible.

Wow. He is a good man. Now we need to bring home another championship for him and the team.

I mean I like this statement and agree he could have gotten more elsewhere, but if that was actually the case he could have taken less Is the difference between 22 and 25 million for 2 years that big of a difference when you're worth 200 million? I know it's easy for us to say that as poor peasants, but if it really means that much to you for the team to succeed then it shouldn't be that huge of a jump
All of that said, glad he gave us a discount cause he could have easily raked us for 30m/yr

I'm gonna miss that man when he does retire! Now lets win another Lombardi.

This wasn’t a discounted deal. He’s aging and could fall off a cliff. It’s a dead on Fair deal for both sides.

He basically signed a one year $27 million dollar deal.
WTF is he talking about "putting the team first"?

If he hit the open market fully, he could've gotten 30+ mill/year from someone I'm sure.

Cousins just signed for 3 yrs $84 million...Thats $28 per and its FULLY GUARANTEED!!!!
And he has never won shite!
Drew just signed for 2 years $50 with only $27 Guaranteed
He coulda got serious money on the open market

Yes, continue to work hard this offseason and you might win it all. What position do you play?

It is absolutely a discount. If he would have went elsewhere to a QB needy team he would have demanded much more than what we just paid him.

This only works if the FO makes good decisions with the money Brees walked away from.
[fingers crossed]

So far it looks like they aren't making any decisions. We're just watching all the guys sign while we're haggling over a couple mil for a TE who we know will dominate in our offense

Yeah, I don’t think some people understand this. Also, he can’t take less cause it could hurt other players trying to sign big deals. That’d be a dick move.

quote:Imagine what position he'd put the team in if he took $1M? Not saying he should, but don't bring this bs talking point. He's 99% about the money.
But for me this was about putting our team in the best position to go win a championship in the next few years

The second year is merely for cap. It is a one year $27 million guaranteed.
That's $1 million less than cousins .

Let's not forget, too, that he's basically signing a one year deal. At 39 years old, that's a lot of risk for him to take on, but it protects the Saints from the potential downside of having an expensive 40/41/42-year-old QB on the books who can't play. That's being pretty "team-friendly" IMO
