Biggest downside to trading up

I would like to preface with the fact that I love the Davenport pick and think he will end up being one of the best DE's in the league in a year or two. And I know that he would not have lasted until 27; Hell, I think Green Bay would have taken him if we wouldn't have traded. I heard several teams were looking to trade up for Davenport in the 12-15 range.
Anyway, the biggest downside to going up to grab an elite prospect like this is obviously the 2019 first round pick. My biggest thing, is even if the pick is the 32nd pick next year, it gives us absolutely no draft capital to acquire the QB of the future next year. IF that pick is at 32, then our next pick would be in the second round at #32. That will NOT be enough to move up and draft any QB and thus the next time we have a chance to draft one is in 2020 and after Drew's contract expires. I like the idea of having someone sit behind Drew, but I think the front office has plans to have a solid team and get a QB from FA while modeling after the Vikings.
All in all, we gave up our chances for a top flight QB next year. Lets hope the Davenport pick will pan out (I think it will). Otherwise we really have to hit on all of our late round picks again, or use all the capital we have to go get Rudolph this year.
Also, just for reference, I was a fan of trading back into the second and maybe getting 2/3, 2/32 and something else from the Browns and grabbing quality guys in the top 100. Id rather see us make that trade and use the 5th's and 6th's to go get a high 3rd round pick. The draft is a gamble, and the more picks inside the top 100 the better.
Edit: I don't want to start a new thread and just want to put this here.
First, I am not an LSU fan, (Ole Miss) but what happens if Arden Key is still sitting at 3/27? If you could throw Davenport at 6'6 inside, with Key on the outside, you would have one hell of a Dline for years. Think about it... Jordan, Rankins, Davenport, Key, with QUALITY depth behind them. Just something to think about, even though I know we plan on using Davenport as a DE

Trade all our picks for a top 5 pick and get Jarrett Stidham. Problem solved.

I’ve been melting since last night for the reasons you stated but maybe they really do feel strongly about Taysom.

I think 2020 is when they draft a qb. Drew plays two years signs for another year on a cheap contract. We sign a veteran that is ready to play just Incase Drew can’t play they swamp the rookie with all the information possible. Also load up with more weapons this draft and next

2019 qb class isn't looking that terrific thus far.

Wait til Tua Tagovoila enters the draft . Guy is gonna be a rock star.

It's definitely a gamble, and a gamble that hardly any NFL teams would ever do for a non-QB.
Additionally, a DE will never equate to anything more than .5 of a point in determining any Vegas spread. As great as JJ Watt is, he barely moves the line. QBs can change a spread almost double digits .
Let's hope Brees is an ageless cyborg.

there aren't a lot of great QBs in next year's draft

Haha, you're right, but its not exactly how Davenport will affect opposing offenses on his own, its about how he affects our defense as a whole. With Davenport, our CBs instantly get better, they don't have to defend as long.

I see what you are saying, and REALLY hope it plays out like that. However, I'm pretty risk averse and don't like the idea of planning for this to happen. But again, i like the idea of someone sitting behind Drew, but theres a reason I am not a GM.

There is a chance that SP and Ireland see something in a QB that others don't. a lower level draft pick. SP has a good eye for Offensive players and Ireland is the bomb. I trust them. Outside of SP and Loomis for Defensive players.

You're right, but to me, that would require trading into the late second or early third to get Rudolph, Lauletta, White, or Falk. Trading up will almost certainly require us giving up a future pick and thats something we really cannot afford after yesterday.

I don't think anyone can argue Davenport fits what the Saints need. 1st round picks have so much perceived value as future assets you just never see teams offer them up unless it's for QBs.
I would've trusted the Saints to make the right decision @ 27, dumping off a 1st rounder seems too desperate for me, especially since the roster still has other needs.

I would have rather stayed put and drafted CB Jackson.
A two first round pick is not used on a project.

I agree with this post. Davenport better pay off and Drew better stay healthy.

Link to where Browns wanted to trade into 27? You cant trade without a partner.
Otherwise good post.

Lamar Jackson would not have been a viable option if Drew was to get hurt. He is more raw as a QB than Davenport as a DE. So if Drew does get hurt, we are toast anyway. However Davenport gives us an impact player now with huge upside.
Assuming that we are picking in the second half of next years draft, we won’t be in a position to get a top QB prospect in next years draft (if one presents themselves). Aside from the fact that we are in win now mode, it makes sense to,draft a player to help us win now, with Drew, that draft a QB for the further or as insurance.
I think when Drew retires, we will be looking at a veteran QB anyway.
