Asked Zion if this was just a conditioning issue:

He said it’s not. But said it’s getting his flow of the game and rhythm back. Said it’s the best players in the world and you want to feel comfortable on the court. Added that he doesn’t want to hurt team more than he helps them.

Because 13 points on 8 shots was hurting the team...I understood the concept of "we're changing his movements and don't want him to get fatigued and fall back on injury prone, old habits." 3 minutes a quarter seems arbitrary and not lined up with any specific goals other than the training staff being cowardly and risk averse.

I’m sensing a pattern.

Sitting on the bench seems like a great way to achieve this.

We’ve gone from one extreme to another.

A former medical staff that was grossly incompetent, that a guy could have been shot 17 times and his leg is hanging on by a thread and they say “eh get on out there you’re fine”.

To

So overly cautious and scared it borders on total lunacy. If a guy has a scratch he’s out 8-25 weeks.

There has to be a middle ground.

I'm starting to get the sense that the team doesn't care about making the playoffs this year.

I think the team mostly cares.

I honestly think Griffin does not.

I think he sees it as irrelevant for this year.

After tonight, it's a tough sell to say playoffs are one of our priorities.

I should have been more clear. I think the players want to. I don’t think the management cares

You don’t put him in on that strict of a minutes restriction in this situation if you’re serious about wanting to make the playoffs. I think they want to get the guys some valuable experience in these 8 or so games and move onto to the offseason.

I figured they were going to limit his minutes. I thought it would be more like 20-22ish. 15 mins just seems weird.

I don't see why they shouldn't increase it to 20-25ish next game and then take the training wheels off the last 6.

I just looked and Favors played exactly 15 minutes when he returned from a few weeks off. It still seems pretty ridiculous and overly risk averse.

Well favors only ever plays 22 minutes a game anyway so it’s not that much of a restriction for him

Also maybe Nelson gets this reputation of being a great team doctor or whatever he is because he puts such strict restrictions on them. He’s rep will go up but the team performance suffers

In the long term, I think it is irrelevant. I don't buy the notion that making the playoffs will help them in the future. I've seen this franchise make the playoffs, have good showings, then shite the bed the next year 2-3 times now. I want them to make the playoffs because I think there's enough talent to actually make some noise right now.

I like that leadership. 20 year old taking bullets for the bum coach and garbage trainers.

After the horror we went through with our old training staff, I don't mind them being over cautious with Zion. Where not ready to compete now so why risk him for a meaningless 8th seed. Shot I'm not even mad if we don't make the playoffs half of the fun is going to the games. There is nothing like that playoff atmosphere at the arena, and we can't have that this year. I'm just happy to see the Pels play.

Honestly, the way our guards were chucking the ball out of bounds how much more could Zion have hurt the team?

I don't disagree with any of the complaints in this thread about management and/or the training staff.

However, I do think we should also acknowledge that Zion looked fat as frick tonight. This was the heaviest i've ever seen him. Maybe that played into their playing time decision. The guy missed less than two weeks and came back looking like Glen Davis.

isnt it the training staffs job to get him not fat? Seems like they’re doing a horrible job at it

If the team doesn’t want to mess with Zion’s weight, then they really need to change the style of basketball they play. Zion needs to play a slower and more controlled pacing to allow him to rest in between possessions and let him pick his spots to burst. This high pace we play is pointless to gain extra possessions especially when they turn the ball over 18 times a game.

Obviously thats part of their job, but i'm positive that whatever program they have him on doesn't involve him walking out there tonight with a gut. He has to do the work.
