When I look at the free-agent bigs out there, Collins is someone who really intrigues me.
He missed all last season with his bad left ankle, and he re-fractured it last month and had surgery again (reportedly just walking to the mailbox), and his projected recovery to be able to play is now December.
The Blazers are going to decline to extend a $7 million qualifying offer, so he'll be an unrestricted free agent. Someone is going to give Collins more than the minimum, likely on a multi-year deal with just the first year guaranteed, to protect the team in case he really can't come back.
Who knows if he'll ever play again and what kind of player he'll be if he does return, but he's only 23 years old, and he shot 37% from the 3-pt line the season before last. I think he'd make a great fit with Zion.
If we trade Adams, what do y'all think about something like a $3-4 million deal for him, using part of the MLE? We might get nothing out of him, and we might get a really good rotation player.

We would have the BAE available to us also, I wouldn't mind using that on him, and giving Burks the entire MLE.

In a miniscule sample size though.

For a very small deal that is short term. 1 plus team option.
He’s made of glass.

He’s always getting hurt. Not a fan

NBA snobs love the guy and i've never understood it. He never plays and he's not even good when he does.

If he's a low money short term contract and we're just taking a flier on a past lottery talent then sure. But counting on him for a substantial role would be crazy.

There just aren't a lot of 7-foot, young, athletic guys who can shoot 3s well.
If Collins can make a full recovery, then he could end up as a key rotation player for us. Again, he's only 23 and his game would likely still have a lot of growth in it.
But he also might end up never playing basketball again. I like Soggymoss's idea of using the BAE, because that's $3.7 million and sounds about right for him.
If he ends up unable to play, we only are out Gayle's money and a roster spot. It just seems like a good gamble to me.

I just can't believe this dude will ever be healthy he makes AD look like AC Green when it comes to availability.

Nerlens Noel is the call u make, defensive purposes only

He’s not a true “big” but I would love to get Doug McDermott to play the 3 and some small ball 4.

This legit made me laugh out loud
With that being said, his advance stats and PER really aren't that great, his per 36 minutes aren't anything special and he's played 11 games in 2 years and had to have a 2nd surgery on his ankle a few weeks ago.
Is being 6'11 250lber with good athleticism and 3 point range enough too overcome all of that? It seems to risky considering we need a big turnaround next year.

I thought the headline of this was “John Collins” and was very confused.
I’d take a flyer at the minimum. We need all the cap space we can get at this point, can’t spend too much on an unknown

I don’t think Collins was that talented before the injuries.
I’d prefer to find a way to get McDermott.

Before the injuries, Collins looked like a promising lottery pick still learning how to play the game. If, God forbid, Jaxson Hayes were to get injured today, the situation would be similar.
Again, he's only 23. Some of the guys in the draft are the same age.

The thing about Collins is he doesn't make a big impact in limited minutes, likely due to his injury history. When healthy and given minutes he’s made a major impact for the Blazers. He's versatile, can play in big or small lineups, does a good job of rebounding, serviceable rim protection, along with a good touch and the ability to stretch out to the 3 line. Maybe Nelson can fix his feet.
I think we have a similar skill player to Collins with Wenyen. Interesting to see what the Pels do with him.

He's just not that good. He rebounds like a guard. He's not really a shooter. Not a great defender The Blazers are letting him walk despite being desperate to upgrade their team.
These bigs "that can shoot" are continuously overrated. See Markannen
