Maybe we're not going with a recycled coach?

Plenty of up and coming assistant coaches have made the transition to Head Coach just fine recently
I was looking at championship coaches a few weeks ago and it was impossible to miss how many of them were first time HCs.

Going back 30 years, the only "retreads" to win titles were Larry Brown, Doc, and Carlisle. Chuck Daley had one random season in Cleveland before going to Detroit. I don't count Phil or Pat Riley as retreads because those guys were HOFers that weren't fired from their previous jobs.

Majority of the Finals losers over that period were also on their first HC job.

The 80s look pretty similar as well with Riley in LA and Cunningham in Philly, although Boston did have a couple retreads.

Guess its not shocking that bad coaches don't suddenly get better their 3rd, 4th, 5th time around.

Rather get a coach than can grow with the team.
This is all I wanted when we were picking a HC last time. Someone that could grow with AD. Instead we picked a 60 year old.

Not we might actually be looking at the prospects of our HC being 50...FIFTY, years older than our franchise player if we go with D'antoni.

D’Antoni is gonna be in Philly or less likely Indy.

Which could mean we have done several informal interviews.

Assistants in the bubble are aware of who is courting them usually through their agents. Pels will leak their next coach by game 3-4 of the Finals.

I think we are waiting for Jordi Fernandez and Jay Larranga. Maybe Unseld or Craig, but I’m hoping it’s Fernandez.

To me, jay larranaga Is the most impressive potential first time HC.

Yeah digging into him he's a pretty impressive guy. He rarely gets talked about but he has had interviews with other teams in the past and supposedly interviewed well.

No, when I watched the story he used slightly different words.

He said they haven't "really" done "formal" interviews.

Those are key words. It likely means they have done "informal" interviews, probably quite a few.

If this is our/Griffin's philosophy on how to pick a new head coach, we are better off with Chris Finch

It would be discouraging. Coaching, while often somewhat overrated in this league unless you are exceptionally elite, is such a dumb place to pinch pennies. It's one of the few places where a small market can make up for a deficit in attractiveness to major FA's by having a really good staff that can develop and scheme for players.

But again, I dont think there are any confirmations of this? And most indicators say the opposite.

Billy Donovon is one of the most experienced coaches that hit the market and just signed for 6 million a year, in a large market.

Rumors were we were looking at about a 5.5 million a year budget for a HC. Anyone we hire be it Lue, Mike D or whoever, the money won't be a stopping factor from getting who we want.

And that would make sense and be fine. Having a forecasted budget to anticipate resources is normal financial management. If that number was a hard cap that would be where I would start looking side-eye at the Benson regime. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

Windhorst (yeah I know) says we are very interested in Lue, and that we may be waiting to see what happens in Philly.

Windhorst does get a lot of things right. Only guy who said Deangelo Russell would go to Warriors

Listening to his segment, Lue was only mentioned with us and Philly.

Houston he said a favorite is Jeff Van Gundy, the rest of the teams were alot of first time head coaches.

Pacers he said have interviewed over 20 candidates

Seems like the conventional wisdom of what we have been speculating for a few weeks.

That concerns me, not because we want to hire Lue, but because we seem to be waiting on one guy and not looking elsewhere or thinking outside the box.

FYI, I think things like this deserve their own thread on this board. We always want more people seeing things.

I agree.

I also don't like that idea of waiting on a guy this long who clearly has us as a backup plan, at best, and doesn't seem overly concerned about NOT getting hired here.

There are only 30 of these jobs and this was supposedly a great opening. Why are we begging some non top tier guy to take the job?
