I say incompetent because we're missing out on potential candidates, unless they already know who they want. Which, IMO, is also weird to have selected a candidate before having any interviews.

it would be incompetent for the Pels to not even have started interviewing.

Usually the interview process happens in a pretty condensed period of time. Say 2-3 weeks for both 1st and 2nd interviews. If there are one or more candidates in the bubble, I can see waiting until everyone is available to start the process rather than spreading the interview process out over several weeks or more.

The last thing you want to do is have your Billionaire boss that owns 2 pro teams waste her time interviewing "early" candidates who then take other jobs while you wait for the Bubble candidates to become available. Wait for the Bubble candidates and start everything at the same time and you won't risk looking like you wasted Gayle's time.

Well the two people hired so far may not have even been people we were interested in.

Which is valid, but how did we know those would be the two hired?

Fair point.

I don't know what we are doing, or why, but we will just have to be patient and see the results.

I think the answer to your question is that if there was an available candidate that seemed head and shoulders above the pack, he'd have been hired already. The fact that we haven't officially started the process says a lot about the mutual interest level for the non Bubble candidates, besides maybe Lue who we have been tied to but might as well be in the Bubble with him being up for several more playoff ready openings.

just thought it would get buried in that thread and not many people would see it. This board could always use more discussion.

You were right because I would have missed it. I appreciate the effort on your part being our board's beat report er

Dont know if that was a facetious comment, but I appreciate you remembering it.
Like I said before, Im not at liberty to speak on it anymore out of respect for a few people, but I definitely wasnt blowing smoke in the air.
What I can say is that it is still on the table.

Sounds like they know who they want and they already have a verbal agreement from that person.

No it isn't.
If it was, that hire would have been made by now.

It's pretty obvious that they have a few guys in mind, and there are serious contenders in the bubble that they are waiting to interview, like Unseld and Dan Craig.
They can talk about being patient in this process all they want. If they didn't have strong interest in bubble guys, the hire would have been made by now. There is no reason at all to continue to wait to hire a coach, unless they could care less about winning next year. There are already teams that are staring to prepare for next year. There's nothing positive about waiting to hire someone, just b/c. When you have your guy, you hire him asap. It's important for the players on the team to know who their new coach is going to be, and start developing a relationship with him and figuring out the things they should be working on before training camp.

Someone should be hired before by mid October. I don't understand how you're supposed to draft guys or make trades or FA decisions without a head coach that knows what the frick is going on. The longer they wait, the more i will dislike it, b/c it would appear that Griffin wants to be in complete control of the team with little regard to what the coach wants, which we've already seen with Zion's minutes. I think the decisions he made in Cleveland, all the trading picks away and extending players to stupid contracts, those weren't all his decisions fully, and he doesn't want it like that ever again and wants complete control of the team.
That's likely way D'Antoni and Donovan had no interest over here, or we didn't have any in them b/c they wouldn't just bend over and take it. Griff wants a guy that will be fine with Griff's decisions and not give him any pushback. That's not how a GM/HC relationship should be.

Here's the really quick segment if anybody wants to watch. At about 1:30.

WOJ

Watching it for the first time since early this morning, i guess "formally" could mean a lot.

He said we "haven't really conducted formal interviews yet".

Which could mean we have done several informal interviews.

Of course they did several informal interviews already.
I'd bet money they have the 3 or 4 guys they want to interview formally, and are just waiting for all of them to become available for that.

I think if they were wowed by Atkinson, they would have hired him already. The fact that they are waiting for the guys in the bubble like Lue, Ham, Unseld, Craig, Quinn, says that they probably aren't leaning towards Atkinson.

Chris Quinn is someone who hasn't been mentioned much, but he's been the director of player development for Miami the last 4 years, and that has seemed to go pretty damn well. Last game he was in the huddle drawing up plays during timeouts. I think he may need another 2 years before he gets a HC job. he's still just 36.

The newest Woj pod just came out. Seems like Philly might be down to Lue and D'antoni.

He said that the teams left with openings aren't necessarily in a rush to make hires and threw out there that teams might not be in a hurry to start paying new coaches and staffs, with the revenue losses from this season, and the uncertainty of when next season will even start.
